Last week on Beyond The Gates, Dani taunted a couple on their anniversary, Anita struggled through treatment, Bill decided he wanted an heir, and Hayley and Randy were finally spotted conspiring. Let’s break it all down day by day.
Monday
Bill and Hayley celebrated their first anniversary, and Dani, being Dani, gifted them tissue. Petty, unserious, and honestly on brand.
Meanwhile, Joey remained both curious and suspicious about Randy. His criminal senses were tingling, and for good reason. Over with Naomi and Kat, the two caught up about Kat’s apartment search, and Naomi offered what might have been the best advice of the week: Tomas may not be the one for Kat. Say it again, Naomi. We were all right there with you.
Of course, Ashley had an oncology rotation starting. Skip. Anita was forced to begin a new chemo treatment with even worse side effects, which was hard to watch. Shanice’s aunt also came to town and immediately put Ted to the test. Unfortunately for me, she ended up liking him.
Later, Bill took Hayley to the casino because apparently that was his idea of romance. Joey, meanwhile, taunted Hayley because like a dog with a bone, he wasn’t letting go. He knew Sledge was innocent, and every instinct in him was telling him Hayley and Randy were running some kind of con. The only question was how long it would take him to prove it. Anita underwent her new treatment, and the weight of it all settled over the episode.
Tuesday
Leslie and Vanessa clashed over the clinic, and what do you know, Vanessa was finally able to go bar for bar with her. Derek stepped in to mediate, but the tension was there.
Bill decided he wanted to try again for a baby, but Hayley was reluctant at first before seeming to consider it. Can we wrap this story up? It felt choppy, and everybody involved looked ridiculous, especially Bill. If he was not playing Hayley, then what exactly was the point of all this? Because right now, he just looked foolish.
Ted met up with Izaiah, Carlton, and Andre for basketball, which of course happened offscreen. Insert eye roll here. Ted’s real goal was to bond with Izaiah, and later, after Ted and his team lost to Kial and Andre, he and Izaiah finally talked about his intentions where Eva was concerned. Meanwhile, Eva was talking to Tomas about the same thing for reasons I still do not understand.
Wednesday
Carlton tried to cozy up to Vernon, and Vernon practically laughed in his face. As suspected, Carlton had been carrying a torch for thirty years, and I still do not trust that man as far as I can throw him. I do not like him for Nicole. That said, I did have to laugh at the contrast: while Carlton was cracking on with Vernon, Nicole was off getting cracked by Kial.
Vernon also gave Chelsea a much-needed pep talk. Ashley kept meddling in Grayson’s business, but at least Grayson seemed to understand where she was coming from. Lia continued to move in mystery, but by now we all knew she was tied to the plasma ring somehow.
Hayley also managed to convince Bill to work on Lynnette’s case, because apparently, that man had learned absolutely nothing.
Thursday
Hayley and Randy, operating with a combined brain trust of negative one, met up at the Uptown and had a tense conversation in public like the two geniuses they are. Of course they were spotted by Chelsea and Madison. Once Randy left, Chelsea and Madison approached Hayley, and when questioned, Hayley put on the most painful crying performance imaginable. It was terrible. Somehow, they still soothed her and took her home, where she turned around and cranked the fake fear up even higher for Bill. She even floated hiring Sammy for protection.
Insert deep, heavy Negro spiritual sigh here.
Bill then got Lynnette’s charges dropped by calling in a favor, because apparently, consequences are optional in Fairmont Crest.
Elsewhere, Eva and Derek talked clinic business, and I cannot lie, the vibe between them was actually nice. The clinic was also somehow scheduled to open in just a few days. That was fast. Vanessa then insisted Derek be the spokesperson. Not Samantha. Not Martin. Derek. I did not like the optics of that at all, but I was too tired to fully unpack it.
Derek reluctantly agreed.
Friday
Samantha and Martin caught up and talked about boys, Cotillion, and life, and for once I did not want to fast-forward Samantha’s scenes. That alone was noteworthy.
Derek went to the hospital to talk to Lia about partnering with the clinic. She brushed him off at first, but the second she heard the word clinic, she was suddenly interested. Ashley, naturally, was proud of Derek.
Anita, meanwhile, was feeling the full effects of her new treatment. She was drained, and Tracey’s visit ended up being a soothing balm in the middle of all that heaviness.
And then there was Jacob.
Jacob met with his contact in the alley because apparently all crime in this town must happen in the exact same location. We could not get one new set? The man told Jacob he was getting more responsibility and gave him a new hat, which was how he would be identified for the next drop.
Then came the foolishness.
Naomi and Smitty were having a nice moment when Smitty got a call. Of course it was Jacob, calling just minutes after being told he was being watched. You cannot see it, but mentally I was screaming. Then Smitty showed up with his hat turned to the back like that alone was supposed to make him blend in with the criminal element. His pants were not hanging low, though.
Insert another heavy sigh.
Jacob went to make the drop wearing headphones and clear glasses, which was already dumb enough. Then Grayson got on the elevator. They tried to hide the reveal for a second, but we all knew exactly where it was going. And what did Jacob do? Instead of keeping his head down and using literally any common sense, he looked up trying to spot the contact, and the two recognized each other.
He could have used his phone. He could have worn sunglasses. He could have thrown on scrubs and a surgical mask.
But no. The writers chose stupidity.
Weekly Wrap-Up
I do not have much else to say about this week. It was riddled with stupidity, bad decisions, and pure clownery. There were a few bright spots, especially where Anita was concerned, but overall this was one of those weeks where the writing asked everybody involved to lose common sense at the exact same time.
