Beyond The Gates Weekly Recap: Dani Gets Betrayed Again and Hayley Is Pregnant

Man in a dark suit stands beside TV screens showing a couple, against blue curtains, with a serious expression.

Last week on Beyond The Gates, Heather has delusions of murder, a truce is made, Smitty gets a surprise visit, and Hayley receives news that could throw her entire escape plan into chaos. Meanwhile, Dani is forced to confront yet another betrayal from her past, and Ted and Shanice’s wedding preparations seem determined to swallow every storyline in Fairmont Crest.

Let’s break down a week that had a few bright spots but also left me wondering when some of these characters will finally get the stories they deserve.

Enough With the Wedding Already

The elder Duprees learn about Ted and Shanice’s upcoming wedding, and Ted offers two assurances. First, he and Shanice will not move to Fairmont Crest without Nicole’s approval. Second, Leslie should be less of a problem now that she is seeing Marcel.

Ted does wonder whether Marcel might share their secrets with her. Vernon assures him that Marcel is a bonekeeper who will keep those secrets buried because exposing them could hurt him, too. Nicole and Kat also discuss the wedding. Nicole asks whether Kat is projecting, given that she has always been something of a daddy’s girl who wanted her parents back together. Kat insists that she just wants to make sure her mother is okay. They also talk about keeping Samantha busy in the wake of Smitty’s arrest.

My problem? This week is practically one long wedding planning session, and I am already tired. Nicole barely has a story, while a cheater and his mistress get the grand proposal, the wedding, and everybody’s attention. Nicole is the first Dupree daughter, and she is getting crumbs. Shanice is insecure about where she and Ted will live, and Ted suggests Fairmont Crest. He eventually calls Nicole about house hunting, and she not only gives her blessing but also connects him with

Vanessa, who will help him find the perfect house. Ted shares the news with Shanice, but she remains unsure.

Even Dani and Vernon’s daddy-daughter time, which I always enjoy, turns into another conversation about the wedding and its impact on Nicole. Can somebody please give these people something else to discuss? Shanice also brings Kat and Eva together to call a truce so she and Ted can have their perfect wedding. That irks me, too. She has barely spent time with either woman, and now that she has a ring, she is making demands?

Speaking of Kat and Eva, this rivalry is stale, dry, tired, and nearly moldy. Izaiah and Eva share a sweet moment, but Kat comes up because Eva apparently cannot enjoy herself without Kat entering the conversation. Kat does the same thing with Eva. At this point, both women need something else to occupy their time.

Eva and Izaiah Celebrate While Kat Wants Answers

At The Uptown, Izaiah surprises Eva with chocolate sodas to celebrate one year since they met. It is a sweet gesture, and I appreciated seeing them enjoy a moment together without the usual drama.

Eva wants to call Leslie and tell her about it, but Izaiah knows exactly where that will lead: Leslie showing up. This is their day, so Eva agrees to take pictures and send them later. Kat arrives looking for Izaiah and approaches while he is with Eva. Hmm. If Eva interrupted Kat’s date like that, her haters would want her head on a stick. Izaiah explains that they are celebrating their anniversary, and Kat leaves them to it.

The writers are also acknowledging Kat and Izaiah’s friendship now. Okay, but considering he was away, showed up drunk at the wedding, and then left, I would appreciate seeing more of that friendship rather than simply being told about it.

Elsewhere, Andre and Kat discuss her disagreement with Eva over wedding DJs. The two women are sticking to their truce, though. How thrilling. Their conversation eventually turns to Smitty’s case, and once again, this show will not let Kat be great. Give that girl a podcast and let her cook. She wants to do some investigating herself because, while she does not say it outright, she seems to have very little faith in Jacob’s abilities. Andre tells her to leave it to the police.

Smitty also gets a visit from his mother, although his father stays away because the Duprees’ wealth intimidates him. Are we sure he did not sire one of those two jerks on the dark road that night? Because I have questions.

Meanwhile, Jacob lashes out at Naomi, and I am starting to think he low-key hates the Duprees. He complains about being expected to make sacrifices for her family, which leaves me scratching my head. This man has never seemed reluctant to put bracelets on a Dupree. When, exactly, was he expected to look the other way? Imagine if he knew Martin’s secret. Joey might have to apply some pressure, since this show keeps making him the only man who can save everybody.

Dani Dupree Deserves Better Than Another Bill Hamilton Betrayal

Apparently, Dani has an interview scheduled and has forgotten all about it. Pamela and her accent arrive to remind her. Pamela also helps her choose an outfit because, naturally, Dani should be wearing a Tatum original. She nervously tells Andre that he is expected to take a few pictures, and he agrees.

Then the interview happens, and I have questions. We are in Season 2, and suddenly we are getting This Is Your Life: Dani Dupree? Dani’s family members are interviewed about their relationships with her. For whatever reason, that includes Bill.

Then comes Kalista, the woman who discovered Dani and became her first agent. She clearly has no love for Dani, and she uses the interview to reveal that she slept with Bill.

During a break in filming, Dani nearly walks out. Nicole helps her collect herself, and host Tia Allen assures her that the revelation will be cut. Sure it will. We all know that footage is going to see daylight. Here is my bigger gripe: Why is it so difficult to give Dani and Nicole Black friends? We finally meet a Black woman from Dani’s past, and she is another person who betrayed her.

The white savior dynamic on this show is becoming hard to ignore. Joey keeps getting positioned as the man who can fix everybody’s problems. Pamela, whom I love even with that phony accent, is there to help Dani put herself back on the map, something a Black woman apparently couldn't do. To top it off, that same woman betrayed her in the worst way. Then there are Kial and his son, helping women through grief and heartbreak.

Any one of those relationships could work on its own. Taken together, on a show centered on a Black family, the pattern feels strange. Where are Dani and Nicole’s Black girlfriends? Where are the women who knew them before the latest crisis and can show up without being another source of pain?

As for Bill, is this finally the nail in the coffin for a reunion with Dani? Are the writers moving away from putting them back together? Because how does anyone root for that now? We have already seen him have sex with Hayley in their marital bed and crudely dismiss Dani when she catches them. Now we learn that he also slept with Kalista in their home. Why do the writers keep beating my girl down like this? Knowing that she recently slept with him again should make her feel nauseous.

Dani later reflects on being a fool for Bill, and I cannot blame her for feeling that way. She deserves more than another revelation about how badly this man treated her. I do love Bill and Naomi’s scenes together, though. Their conversation about the past is another reminder of how well those two work opposite each other.

Heather’s Dark Thoughts and Hayley’s Unexpected News

Dani has brunch with Heather and gushes about Andre. Heather responds by imagining stabbing her to death. Well, that certainly changes the mood over brunch. Also, why is Dani, who has been betrayed over and over, so forthcoming with information about her life to a mere stranger? Sure, she likes Heather and believes she isn't her brother. Got it, cool, but be more cautious.

Leslie and Heather also meet, but that encounter did very little for me. Yawn. At this point, there are far more interesting developments happening elsewhere in Fairmont Crest. Meanwhile, Randy presents Hayley with options for her new identity, and she hates every last one. She wants to become someone her next mark will notice. Does anyone believe this woman is going anywhere?

Hayley pays Randy and receives another proposed identity that she hates: a nanny. Randy points out that nannies have close access to the people they work for, so the role could put her exactly where she needs to be. Later, Leslie suggests that Hayley is gaining weight, prompting Hayley to take a pregnancy test. Dun, dun, dun. Two pink lines. So much for that exit plan.

A Few Bright Spots in a Frustrating Week

Not everything this week was frustrating. Caroline gives Bill a pair of boxing gloves and tells him he is a fighter who can box his way out of anything. These are nice scenes, and I found myself wondering whether something romantic might develop between them.

I would not necessarily mind it, although I would like to believe Caroline is too smart to sign up for the Bill Hamilton experience. Then again, this is Fairmont Crest, where questionable romantic decisions practically come with the ZIP code.

I also enjoyed Dani and Vernon’s time together, despite the conversation circling back to wedding business. Izaiah’s sweet anniversary gesture for Eva was another welcome moment, and Bill and Naomi continue to have a compelling dynamic whenever they share the screen.

But those moments cannot completely make up for the week's larger problems. There is plenty of potential in these characters, and I wish the writers would spend less time repeating the same conflicts and more time giving them something meaningful to do.

Final Thoughts on the Week

This week was just okay. There were moments I enjoyed, especially Dani and Vernon’s time together, Caroline’s scenes with Bill, and Izaiah’s gesture for Eva. But the wedding talk swallowed too much of the week, and the same rivalries and frustrations kept making the rounds.

Nicole needs a story with some weight. Kat and Eva need something to do besides the constant bickering and back-and-forth with each other. Dani deserves more than another revelation about how badly Bill treated her.

The repetition makes me want to step away for a while. But I will be here, recapping and hoping next week gives us a little more to work with.
