Baywatch Reboot First Teaser Drops: Hobie Buchannon Returns With a Twist

Grab your sunscreen and get ready to run in super slow motion. The very first Baywatch teaser trailer has officially washed ashore and it is bringing a wave of nostalgia with a side of family drama. Over the weekend, series star Stephen Amell took to Instagram to share a sneak peek of the upcoming Fox reboot. Armed with the tagline, "Same beach. New blood," the clip makes one thing very clear: the iconic lifeguards are back and they are still incredibly good-looking.

For a generation that grew up on the sun-drenched beaches of Malibu, news of a reboot might cause a bit of hesitation. After all, the original series was a global phenomenon built on a very specific recipe of high-stakes rescues, neon swimwear, and dramatic beach runs. Can a modern version capture that same magic without turning into a total joke? Judging by the initial footage, the new series knows exactly what it is and it is leaning hard into the past while trying to build a future.

Hobie Buchannon Is the New Captain in Charge

Stephen Amell is not playing a random new character. Instead, he is stepping into the sandals of Hobie Buchannon, the son of Mitch Buchannon, famously played by David Hasselhoff in the original run.

Hobie has grown up, moved up the ranks and is now the official Captain of Baywatch. Amell seems perfectly cast for the role, bringing the same athletic intensity he showed in Arrow, just with a lot less clothing. In the teaser, Amell shows off his toned physique while sprinting down the sand with a rescue buoy. He even poked fun at the franchise's most famous trope on social media, captioning his post with, "I dream in slow motion."

But being the boss of the beach is not going to be easy. The plot centers on a massive surprise for Hobie: a daughter he never knew existed shows up on his doorstep. The daughter, Charlie, is played by Jessica Belkin. To make things even more complicated for the new Captain, Charlie wants to follow in the family footsteps and become a lifeguard. The teaser shows a quick shot of Belkin rushing across the sand with a rescue board, proving that the lifeguard gene definitely runs in the family.

Famous Faces and Influencers Join the Cast

While Amell and Belkin handle the central family drama, the rest of the beach is populated by a mix of models, social media stars and returning favorites. The producers are clearly aiming for a mix of modern star power and old-school nostalgia.

The teaser offers quick, dramatic glimpses of the new supporting cast:

  • Brooks Nader: The model stars as Selene and is seen walking down a dark dock at night, looking appropriately intense.

  • Livvy Dunne: The sports influencer plays Grace, captured in the trailer staring out at the ocean in the signature firehouse-red swimsuit.

What to Expect From the Production Team

Bringing Baywatch back to the small screen requires a delicate balance. It needs to honor the cheesy fun of the 1980s and 1990s while updating the storytelling for today's viewers. Luckily, the creative team behind the camera has plenty of experience with high-energy television.

The hour-long drama series is spearheaded by Matt Nix, the creator behind the hit show Burn Notice. Nix is known for creating shows that bring action and humor which feels like a great fit for a lifeguard drama.

Furthermore, the original creators of the 1989 series are on board as executive producers, ensuring the show does not stray too far from its roots. Fox has ordered a 12-episode first season, giving the writers enough time to build a real story beyond just the weekly rescues.

When and Where to Watch the Reboot

The countdown to the beach premiere has officially started. The new Baywatch series is scheduled to debut in late January 2027. Fox is placing the show in its midseason lineup, aiming to heat up the cold winter months with plenty of California sunshine.

For those who prefer to watch on their own schedule, the episodes will also stream on Hulu the day after.
