Apple TV Drops Tense First Trailer for Criminal Record Season 2 — And the Stakes Just Got Deadlier

Two people sit at a table in a dimly lit room, one in a green sweater, the other in a dark suit. A notebook and pen are on the table.

Apple TV is back in the business of slow-burn tension and morally messy policing, unveiling the first trailer for Criminal Record Season 2 and it wastes no time reminding viewers why this London-set thriller earned its stripes the first time around. With a premiere date locked for April 22, the new season promises sharper twists, higher stakes, and a case that feels uncomfortably close to real-world headlines.

The trailer opens with the kind of unease that Criminal Record does best: a public tragedy that spirals into something far more sinister. A young man’s stabbing at a political rally quickly evolves into a sprawling investigation, dragging Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) and Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) back into each other’s orbit. If their dynamic felt strained before, Season 2 looks ready to test it even further, this time with a potential terror plot looming over London.

What stands out immediately is how the series leans into its central theme: truth isn’t fixed, and justice is rarely clean. The trailer hints at an undercover operation targeting a far-right bomb threat, but the real tension comes from the uneasy alliance between Lenker and Hegarty. Trust is in short supply, and the line between doing the job and doing the right thing appears blurrier than ever.

Capaldi’s Hegarty still carries that simmering intensity, equal parts commanding and unpredictable, while Jumbo’s Lenker continues to ground the series with a quiet determination that’s easy to root for. Their push-and-pull remains the show’s engine, and if the trailer is any indication, Season 2 is doubling down on that friction rather than smoothing it over.

Visually, the series retains its gritty, lived-in London aesthetic, favoring shadowy interiors and tense close-ups over flashy spectacle. It’s a smart move; Criminal Record thrives on atmosphere, not gimmicks. The supporting cast, including Dustin Demri-Burns and Luca Pasqualino, adds new layers to an already complicated narrative, suggesting the conspiracy at the heart of this season runs deep.

With eight episodes rolling out weekly through June 10, Apple TV is clearly betting on Criminal Record to keep audiences hooked for the long haul. Based on this first look, that bet feels justified.

The trailer doesn’t just tease another case, it sets up a season that’s bigger, darker, and far more personal. If Season 1 asked whether the system works, Season 2 seems ready to ask who it actually serves. Either way, it’s shaping up to be required viewing for crime drama fans who like their mysteries with a side of moral discomfort.
