The Young and the Restless fans were shocked today when Allison Lanier (Summer Newman) broke the news via her social media account that she will be exiting the role on one of the Eye Network’s favorite daytime dramas. You read that correctly, Allison Lanier leaves The Young and the Restless. Lanier took over the role in 2022 gaining the fans loyalty. Her final episode will air on May 2. Who Is Allison Lanier?

As mentioned earlier, Allison Lanier made her debut as Summer Newman in 2022, taking over the role from Hunter King, another fan favorite. Replacing a fan favorite is not easy, soap fans can be brutal but Lanier made the character her own, earning critical acclaim and a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2024.

Before her time on Y&R, Lanier had credits in shows like Amazon’s Red Oaks and indie films such as Mia and It Happened in L.A.

In her heartfelt statement via her social media account, Lanier explained that she felt it was "time to grow in a different direction" professionally. Her full statement reads, “Hi guys!! This Friday, May 2nd, will be my last episode on Y&R! I’ve loved the journey and learned so much but it's time to grow in a different direction…very grateful for all of the Y&R fans who have supported me <3.” 

Many actors use the daytime drama world as a teaching ground. Her statement does not dive into details but perhaps she has already booked her next project, something different than Summer.

Will Summer Newman Be Recast?

As of now, CBS and the Y&R production team have not announced whether the role of Summer Newman will be recast or written out. However, this is a soap opera so fans shouldn't be surprised if Summer reappears with a new face in the future.
