The episode opens six years ago with Josie — who we know as Carrie Finch — living in a trailer under a bridge with Kyle. She’s pregnant and wants a crib, so she goes out to buy one. When she returns, Kyle is being arrested. The officer tells her he’s being taken in for selling drugs, and Kyle insists he only did it because he wanted money for the crib. After he’s taken away, we see Josie taking the crib pieces and smashing them against the trailer in devastation.
Suddenly, we jump to Josie in the hospital. A nurse tells Josie’s mother that Josie lost the baby, lost a lot of blood, and needs to go home with her since she’s only 16 and needs to recover. Her mother coldly responds that “nothing ever gets better” for either of them.
When Josie gets home, she posts on social media: “In Loving Memory of Josephine Murphy.” She starts taking down everything in her room. Her mother discovers Josie opened a credit card in her name and tells Josie she’ll have to work off the debt.
A year later, Josie is working at her father’s bar, and we learn she has just finished paying off the debt to her mother. She tells her dad she wants to go with him that day, and that’s when we learn her father has “outside interests”—settling debts for people, often violently. Josie asks if she can live with him because she thinks her mother is crazy. He says no, but tells her she can work with him to make extra money to eventually get her own place.
Then the episode jumps forward five years.
Josie and her dad go to Marissa’s ranch over Easter weekend to see Colin. Her dad says Colin owes him a lot of money. Josie offers to pay off Colin’s debt because she feels numb and thinks maybe helping someone else will make her feel something again. Her father is bewildered that she’d want to pay the debt of someone she doesn’t even know and tells her that her mother was right — Josie really is crazy.
Josie gets out of the car and walks around the ranch. She finds Milo sitting alone with his stuffed frog, Mr. Chips. She immediately connects with him, recognizing a familiar way of thinking and feeling.
From there, Josephine starts researching Milo and his family online. She follows him from a distance, prints out pictures of him, and puts them in her room. She begins planning. She buys kid items, practices a script about being a nanny for three families, and cuts her hair.
Her mother finds all the kid stuff in her room and reminds her that “your kid died.” They get into a physical fight, her mother slaps her, and Josie snaps — choking her mother before letting go. Her mother tells her to get out. Josie responds that “Josephine isn’t my name.”
We next see Josie interviewing at Jenny’s house and getting hired. She is now going by Carrie. She’s introduced to Anna, Milo’s nanny. Anna and Carrie take the kids out for milkshakes, and Anna freely shares details about Milo’s house and their daily routines.
Carrie visits Kyle in jail, apologizes for not seeing him sooner, and tells him she’s working as a nanny for a five-year-old boy. Kyle tries to talk her out of taking Milo, but she insists he needs to be with someone who understands him. Kyle eventually agrees to help and says he knows an address where he can send Milo’s parents.
We then see how Carrie kidnaps Milo. At the rental home where Carrie and Kyle keep him, Milo is clearly unhappy and keeps saying he wants to go home. Carrie asks Kyle about the passport she told him to get for Milo — he claims he paid the guy 50%, but the contact isn’t responding to texts. Carrie starts to panic and tells Kyle they need help.
She calls her father, who comes to the rental home and agrees to assist. We see that he’s the one who makes the ransom call to Peter, telling him he has Milo and needs cash ready. Kyle becomes suspicious and believes her dad is only helping because he smells money.
Kyle’s face eventually appears on the news. Carrie’s father decides the new plan is to take Milo to his motel room and clean up the rental so no one knows they were ever there. Carrie drives away with Milo while her father and Kyle stay behind to clean. But then Carrie’s father shoots Kyle in the back of the head.
When Carrie meets her father at the motel, she notices Kyle isn’t there. Her father tells her Kyle wasn’t built for this and probably ran. He tells Carrie to go get something nice for Milo’s birthday, so she leaves to get a cake.
While she’s gone, Carrie’s father tells Milo they’re going to play hide and seek, and that he should hide in the bathroom because “a friend is coming to play.” When Carrie returns, she finds her father dead on the floor.
She plays a recording from his phone and sees the news that Milo has been returned to his parents — and that Kyle was found dead. We flash back to when Carrie was in the hospital years ago, and the truth is revealed: she actually did give birth, but she and the baby got into a car accident on the way home. That’s when the baby died. But Carrie believes there was a mix-up — that Milo is actually her baby, Noah.
We see Carrie telling this to Kyle in a flashback. Kyle insists it’s not possible but ultimately tells her he believes her.
The episode ends with Carrie walking into the Irvine home with a gun, pointing it at the family, and telling them they have her son.
