The first episode starts with Marissa going to a house to pick up her son, Milo, from a playdate a kid from school named Jacob. The elderly woman that opens the door says she doesn't have anyone there with her and doesn't know Milo. Marissa shows the woman the address in the text and the woman agrees that it's the right address but she doesn't have anyone there and doesn't know anything about her child. Marissa goes to call Jacob’s mother, Jenny, to get the right address. Marissa surprised to find out that the phone number is disconnected. The woman that opened the door tells her to come in and see if they can figure it out together. Something about the woman feels too helpful. Why is she letting a stranger into her home if she is not involved? Marissa called another mom, Sarah, to see if she has the correct number for Jenny. Sarah is quite surprised because she actually has Jacob because he is on a playdate with her son.
The elderly woman, Ester, suggests that maybe her nannie picked milo up. Marissa tells her that her nannie is out of town. Marissa calls Milo’s nannie but get no answer. The mom sends Marissa Jenny’s phone number. Jenny answers and says she never sent her a text message about a playdate. Marissa frantically calls her husband, Peter, to see if he picked up Milo and of course he doesn’t have him. Ester drives Marissa to her house. We see she lives in a beautiful massive home. She frantically searches the home but there is no Milo.
The police arrive to interview Marissa and her husband. We find out that Marissa met Jenny at a school event but hasn’t known her long or well. However, when Marissa got the text for the playdate she never checked the number with the school parent list or spoke to her over the phone. Marissa’s friend and business partner, Colin, arrives at her house to offer support, along with brother who lives in the guest house, and his sister. Marissa continues to call her nannie and realizes she left her phone at their home. Peter’s sister arrives at the house to offer support.
Milo’s nannie, Ana, drives up to the house but she doesn’t have Milo. She says she returned to get her forgotten phone. The police says Milos’ teacher said a woman names Carrie Finch picked up Milo. Marissa tells them that she doesn’t know who that is. We see a flashback of Ana and Carrie introducing themselves to each other at a school event and telling each other who they work for. Carrie told Ana she worked for Jenny.
Jenny and her husband, Richie, are interviewed by the police at their home and they offer background on Carrie, who has worked for them for three months. They tell the police that they never noticed anything off or unusual about her. The police tell them it appears Carrie sent the playdate text to Marissa from a burner phone and pretended to be Jenny.
We see a flashback to 10 days earlier where Marissa and Jenny meet at a school parent event and bond over wine in the bathroom. Jenny tells Richie that she wants to go see Marissa and he is strongly against it.
Detective Alcaras and Detective Greco arrive at Marissa and Peter’s house and say usually a ransom will be asked for. Marissa realizes that if there is no ransom coming in soon then Milo will most likely be trafficked. Peter becomes emotional asks Marissa why she didn’t just check the number. Marissa runs out of the house and runs into Jenny who just walked up to her door. They fall into an embrace and Marissa brings Jenny into the house and introduces her as her friend.
The episode flashes forward to Day 27 and the detectives are looking at the suspect board and says “she” knows we know it was an inside job and they honestly didn’t see these nice people killing each other.
