All American Season 8 Episode 4 Review: Secrets Explode in “No More Hiding”

Episode 4 of All American is appropriately titled "No More Hiding," because by the time the credits roll, nearly every secret that has been simmering beneath the surface starts coming out. With only three days left until the showcase, the pressure is mounting, relationships are being tested, and the new vortex is somehow becoming even messier than the original.

The episode opens with a flashback of Amina and KJ video chatting before the school dance. Amina talks about how she doesn't have a date, and KJ jokingly suggests going with friends. Unfortunately, all of her friends are already coupled up. Their conversation eventually shifts to the article she wrote that ultimately got her suspended. We then discover the entire sequence was actually Amina reliving the memory in a dream. Personally, I still think she did the right thing, even if it came with serious consequences.

Meanwhile, Layla sits down with Khalil to find out what's been bothering him. He tells her things are improving with Ms. Perez and even with his father, although his dad has been pushing harder to spend time together. Eventually the conversation turns toward the old vortex and Amina. Khalil admits he's struggling because he knows Amina is keeping secrets, but he also doesn't want to be the person who exposes them. It's a difficult position to be in, and Layla does her best to help him think it through.

Before the conversation ends, we see Layla staring at her father's contact on her phone, reminding us that she's still dealing with her own unresolved family issues.

On the football side of things, KJ walks into Cassius' office quoting scripture, only to get hit with more bad news. Cassius tells him that the meeting regarding his coaching position has been pushed back and that his job has officially been offered to someone else. Even with all that's happening, Cassius tells KJ to stay focused on the showcase.

Back at Layla's house, Khalil asks Tori to come over because he feels she deserves to know what's happening. Layla immediately realizes where the conversation is heading and tries to stop him before he says too much, but it's already too late. Khalil reveals that KJ and Amina are hiding something from her.

Talk about messy.

Amina spends most of the episode replaying memories of KJ in her head, even while spending time with one of her friends. Her friend immediately sees what everyone else has been noticing that Amina clearly can't decide between KJ and Khalil. I won't lie, that conversation had me laughing because it was so obvious.

Elsewhere, Coop and Layla catch up after Layla's vacation with Briana. What starts as a casual conversation quickly turns into something much deeper. Layla opens up about Jordan's coaching opportunity and admits she's afraid that if he accepts the position, their plans to travel through Europe together will disappear. Even more revealing is her fear that she's becoming too comfortable living life without him, just like her father often did in his own relationships.

It's one of the stronger emotional conversations in the episode. KJ and Tori also spend some time training together, but it's obvious KJ has a lot on his mind. Tori notices immediately, but KJ refuses to tell her what's really bothering him. Instead, the episode flashes back once again to the school dance preparations with Amina.

At this point, it became pretty obvious where this storyline was headed. Cassius then gathers the football team and tells them about the possibility of losing his coaching job. In one of the episode's best moments, the players make it clear they want to continue playing for him. It's a nice reminder of just how much respect Cassius has earned from this team.

Layla also spends some time with her father, and the two share a surprisingly relaxed conversation. At one point she even starts asking him random DC Comics questions that honestly felt like she was reading from a magazine interview, but it was still a nice father-daughter moment.

Back at Beverly, Cassius confronts Principal London about the coaching situation. I still don't trust Principal London at all, but I will give Cassius credit for standing up for himself. He reminds London that the players want him as their coach and argues they deserve a voice in the decision.

Then we return to the dance. KJ and Amina are having an incredible time together. They share a beautifully choreographed dance that Amina helped organize, and the chemistry between them is impossible to ignore.

Unfortunately... You already know this isn't going to end well. Back in the present, Tori confronts Amina directly about the secret. Instead of lying, Amina finally tells her the truth. To Tori's credit, she doesn't explode the way I expected. She even offers to help, but Amina insists this is her mistake to fix.

Not long afterward, Amina confronts Khalil for telling Tori anything in the first place. The argument quickly spirals, with Khalil once again making the situation about himself. During the confrontation, though, Amina finally admits what we've all suspected, she wants to be with KJ, but she refuses to be the person who intentionally destroys someone else's relationship.

KJ later talks with Tori, believing she's upset about him attending another school's dance. However, both of them accidentally reveal just enough information for Tori to realize there's an even bigger secret being hidden from her.

Things only get worse from there.

Cassius and KJ discuss the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the football team regarding his coaching, only to learn that once the players found out Jordan was the candidate for the job, they chose to support him instead.

Principal London continues proving just how messy he really is.

KJ is understandably frustrated that Cassius never told him Jordan was involved, but Cassius explains he actually encouraged Jordan to consider the opportunity. Still, he isn't giving up. He believes he has enough support from influential boosters to convince London to reconsider.

Meanwhile, Khalil's father arrives at school earlier than expected, this time alongside Khalil's mother, setting up what looks like another important family conversation.

Finally, KJ runs into Amina at school, and we flash back one last time to the dance. Their slow dance gradually turns into something much bigger. They kiss. Not a quick, accidental kiss, a full, emotional kiss that completely changes everything.

In that moment, KJ opens up about everything that's been weighing on him: Jordan, Cassius, his parents, and the overwhelming feeling that his entire world is falling apart. It's easily one of the episode's strongest emotional scenes and raises the stakes for everyone involved moving forward.

Final Thoughts

Episode 4 continues proving that this new generation has fully embraced the soap-opera side of All American. Nearly every storyline revolves around secrets, relationships, and difficult choices, but somehow the show keeps pulling you back in.

Jordan's coaching dilemma remains compelling, Cassius continues to earn sympathy, and Amina and KJ's relationship has officially crossed a line that will undoubtedly create even more drama in the coming episodes.

At this point, I have to admit it...

All American has me in a full-blown headlock with all this drama.
