Teacher points to chalkboard during a reading lesson on context clues; students watch as words like bad, cold, happy and bright appear.

School is almost back in session at Abbott Elementary, and apparently nobody at this school knows how to have a peaceful semester. Honestly, would we even want them to? ABC has dropped the official Season 6 trailer, and between new jobs, returning chaos and Katy Mixon Greer walking into Abbott ready to get under Melissa’s skin, this school year is already looking like a beautiful mess.

Let’s start with the newcomer, because she clearly came to cause problems. Mixon Greer, who ABC fans will remember from American Housewife, pops up in the trailer as a mysterious new character who almost immediately finds herself going toe-to-toe with Melissa. And naturally, it all starts over a chair. Yes, a chair.

Mixon Greer’s character decides to make herself comfortable in Melissa’s classroom, but Melissa quickly lets her know there is a “hierarchy” at Abbott. Then comes the hair flip. Then Mixon flips hers right back. That tiny exchange is all we needed to know these two are about to be a problem, and frankly, we support the mess.

Melissa already has enough going on without somebody strolling into her territory like she pays rent there. Season 6 also finds her stepping into the role of union representative, which feels both completely logical and potentially terrifying for anyone who has to negotiate with her. Melissa fighting for the teachers while also beefing with somebody down the hallway? Oh, she is going to be busy.

Gregory, meanwhile, has officially entered his assistant principal era, and the trailer wastes no time showing us that the promotion comes with headaches. He is dealing with angry parents and the kind of administrative nonsense that could test even Gregory Eddie’s patience. Remember when this man just wanted to quietly tend to his garden? Look at him now.

Then there is Ava, who remains gloriously committed to doing absolutely nothing the normal way. Her latest solution to dealing with the superintendent is apparently tracking him down on a golf course, because scheduling a meeting is for people who don’t have Ava Coleman’s confidence. With Gregory now working alongside her in administration, watching those two attempt to run Abbott together may be one of Season 6’s funniest new dynamics.

And just when you thought things couldn’t get more chaotic, Tariq is back too. Because of course he is. Abbott can change jobs, shuffle responsibilities and bring in new faces, but some things in life are apparently eternal.

The new season also has some bigger changes to deal with following the school district closures revealed last season. Abbott could be welcoming additional students and staff into a building that was already barely keeping the chaos contained, which gives the show plenty of ways to shake up its familiar formula without losing what makes it work.

As for Janine and Gregory, the trailer is being suspiciously careful. After last season left us with that engagement-ring conversation hanging over their relationship, ABC clearly knows better than to give everything away before the premiere. We see you, Abbott Elementary. You’re not slick.

What the trailer does make clear is that Season 6 is not interested in simply resetting everybody back to where they started. Gregory has a new title, Melissa has new responsibilities, Abbott itself is changing and a new character has already managed to annoy one of the last people at that school you should probably annoy.

Basically, the kids are coming back to school and the adults already need supervision.

Abbott Elementary Season 6 premieres Wednesday, October 7 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
