In the teachers’ lounge, Barbara, Mr. Johnson, and Melissa think they’re meeting Gregory’s new substitute, but it’s actually a couple of students pulling a prank. Mr. Johnson also wants Barbara to go on the nonexistent 'Golden Love Island'. This week is already shaping up to be a funny one.

Thriller Night - Exclusives Only

Ava is throwing a Halloween party, and she wants it to be exclusive: just her, O’Sean, and their sexy friends. Since O’Sean is friends with Gregory, he invites him. The two also talk about Gregory going ring shopping. O’Sean congratulates him and says he and Janine deserve to be happy, no matter what Ava says.

Gregory and Jacob are wearing a couples costume because Gregory once said maybe in five years, and, of course, Jacob set a reminder. Now they’re Arnold and Gerald from "Hey Arnold!", while Janine is Susie Carmichael from "Rugrats".

Janine and Jacob had planned to watch crime documentaries until they fell asleep, but when Gregory mentions the party, they agree to go. Barbara is dressed as the Cheesecake Factory, while Melissa is Jessie from "Toy Story". Jacob extends the invitation to them and announces that everyone is invited.

Oh, this is going to be a night of chaos.

There’s also a funny moment when Jacob assumes Morton is dressed as a flasher. He’s Inspector Gadget. An unfortunate costume misunderstanding.

Ring Shopping Goes Wrong

On the way to the party, Janine checks Gregory’s location and notices that his dot isn’t moving. Since he does food deliveries on the side, he’s usually on the go. Naturally, she starts trying to figure out where he is.

Meanwhile, Gregory has to ring the bell several times before the jewelry saleswoman comes out to meet him. She’s fascinated by his career, and her attempt to identify his costume lands on LeBron James. Then she tells him the ring is in the safe and gives him the combination. When she realizes she should probably change it, Gregory points out that he doesn’t know her wedding anniversary. The whole exchange is hilarious.

The woman’s neurotic behavior eventually startles Gregory into knocking over the rings, which means she has to take inventory. All he wants to do is buy an engagement ring, and she keeps finding ways to delay him. Then Janine calls because he is late to the party after inviting everyone and their momma. Gregory lies about what he’s doing to protect the surprise, but the saleswoman keeps asking questions that could easily make someone on the other end of the phone think he’s cheating. He’s trying to get out of there, and she is making everything worse.

Grown, Sexy and The Restless

Janine and Jacob arrive at Ava’s party carrying a container of games. Ava is already irritated, especially since Janine has shown up to a grown and sexy party dressed as a cartoon character. The two head off to play Cards Against Humanity. Then Barbara and the rest of the gang arrive and immediately start looking for somewhere to sit. Mr. Johnson tells Ava he thought the party was exclusive.

Jacob’s boyfriend intentionally mistakes Ava for Barbara, which certainly doesn’t help her mood. Meanwhile, people start gathering around Barbara and the gang, leaving Ava increasingly frustrated that her party has taken on a life of its own.

Gregory finally arrives as the police show up to shut the party down. Fortunately, the chief helps keep it going.

O’Sean helps Ava, who is dressed as Lil’ Kim, see that the party is a success. It may have gotten away from her original guest list, but people are enjoying themselves.

Keep Calm The Cat is Out of The Bag

After being accused of both cheating and murder, Gregory finally tells Jacob the truth: he’s planning to propose to Janine. Jacob immediately responds, “Of course I will be your best man.” Of course that is where his mind goes. He’s excited in a way that only Jacob can be, and Gregory warns him that he needs to relax before he ruins the surprise. Almost immediately, Jacob nearly does exactly that.

Gregory asks Janine to trust him, which leads her to believe he’s getting them a puppy. Then Ava ruins the surprise.

After all that, the episode closes with Mr. Johnson popping, locking, and dropping it.

Final Thoughts

This episode had everything we love about Abbott: humor, chaos, and an ensemble that makes every situation funnier. Gregory’s increasingly disastrous attempt to buy a ring and Jacob’s inability to contain himself were highlights. Add Ava losing control of her exclusive party and Mr. Johnson dancing us out, and this was a great episode from beginning to end. My rating is a solid 10/10.
