Because apparently regular emergencies are no longer enough for 9-1-1, Season 10 is kicking things off by giving Los Angeles a volcano.

ABC has released the official trailer for the milestone tenth season of 9-1-1, and the 118 is once again facing the kind of emergency that makes you wonder whether anyone in Los Angeles should simply consider moving. The new footage teases a massive sinkhole that somehow becomes an active volcano, because of course it does.

Showrunner Tim Minear revealed that Season 10 opens with the giant sinkhole before things escalate into a volcano, setting the stage for another huge multi-episode disaster. The trailer makes it clear that the danger will put the 118 right in the middle of the action, while also teasing concern surrounding Athena as the crisis unfolds.

Honestly, a sinkhole turning into a volcano feels almost perfectly on brand for this show. 9-1-1 has already thrown just about every natural disaster, transportation nightmare and wildly specific freak accident imaginable at its characters, so reaching Season 10 apparently means it is time to start combining disasters.

The new season will also pick up several major character developments established at the end of Season 9. Athena is

moving forward in her career as a detective, Buck is adjusting to becoming Theo’s guardian, May is beginning a new chapter in the medical field and Harry is continuing his journey as a firefighter. Minear described the upcoming season as familiar 9-1-1 while still opening up fresh territory for the characters.

That balance is probably exactly what the show needs heading into its tenth season. The massive emergencies are always going to be part of the fun, but 9-1-1 works best when the insanity happening outside the firehouse is matched by the emotional chaos happening inside these characters’ lives.

The returning cast includes Angela Bassett as Athena Grant, Oliver Stark as Evan “Buck” Buckley, Aisha Hinds as Henrietta “Hen” Wilson, Kenneth Choi as Howard “Chimney” Han, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Han and Ryan Guzman as Eddie Diaz. Corinne Massiah, Elijah M. Cooper and Gavin McHugh also return.

And if the volcano was not enough, Season 10 arrives during a pretty big night for ABC. 9-1-1 premieres Thursday, October 15 at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the Season 2 premiere of 9-1-1: Nashville and the Season 23 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy.

Ten seasons in, 9-1-1 clearly has no intention of calming down. If anything, this trailer suggests the show has decided that reaching double digits means it is time to turn the disaster dial all the way up.
