Get ready to dust off your polo shirts and fire your caddie. Comedy icon Will Ferrell is finally making his grand entrance into scripted television, and he is doing it on the golf course. Netflix has officially greenlit The Hawk, a 10-episode sports-satire series that marks Ferrell’s first time anchoring a television comedy as both creator and star. Scheduled to drop all at once on July 16, 2026, the show promises to do for the PGA Tour what Talladega Nights did for NASCAR.

The Plot: A Swing and a Missed Reality Check

At the center of The Hawk is Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, played by Ferrell. Lonnie is a spectacularly delusional, washed-up golf legend whose glory days peaked exactly in 2004 when he briefly held the world No. 1 ranking. Fast forward more than twenty years, and Lonnie is a broken-down relic of the fairway. His knees are shot, his family has completely written him off, and his sponsors are long gone.

Yet, Lonnie remains utterly convinced he is just one perfect stroke away from the greatest comeback in sports history. The series follows his desperate, often pathetic campaign to re-enter the PGA Tour. His goal? Win one final major tournament to secure his career Grand Slam, even if it kills him or anyone standing too close to his tee shot.

A Star-Studded SNL Reunion on the Fairway

To pull off this level of sports mythology, Ferrell has assembled a powerhouse comedic cast that doubles as a massive Saturday Night Live family reunion.

  • Molly Shannon co-stars as Stacy, Lonnie’s foul-mouthed ex-wife who has zero patience left for his golfing pipe dreams.

  • Jimmy Tatro plays Lance, Lonnie’s estranged son. In a cruel twist of fate for Lonnie, Lance has just become golf’s newest rising superstar and his father's chief rival.

  • Fortune Feimster injects her signature energy as Sam, Lonnie’s long-suffering new caddie.

  • Luke Wilson plays Golden Fisk, a polished rival pro who has humiliated Lonnie on the leaderboard twice before.

  • Chris Parnell joins the fray as Anton, a painfully straight-laced PGA Tour board member trying to keep Lonnie off the grass.

Behind the camera, the pedigree is just as strong. The series is produced by Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street banner. David Gordon Green directs multiple episodes, ensuring the show balances its absurd humor with a cinematic look. Remarkably, the actual PGA Tour signed on as an official partner, granting the production authentic access to real courses and branding.

The Road to the Tee Box

The journey to the screen was not without its own sand traps. The project was initially announced under the working title GOLF and was co-created with comedian Ramy Youssef. However, Youssef exited the project in August 2025 due to creative differences, prompting Ferrell to re-tool the concept into its current form. Production faced another brief hazard in November when Ferrell suffered a minor, non-serious injury on set, though filming resumed shortly after.

Netflix’s upcoming lineup is betting heavy on sports fiction, and The Hawk looks to be the crown jewel of that strategy. With Ferrell back in his sports-satire comfort zone, subscribers can expect a healthy dose of fragile male ego, terrible outfits, and hilarious country club politics.
