What to Watch Tuesday, September 22: ‘Doc,’ ‘Best Medicine’ & ‘The Voice’

Tuesday is a real fall-TV night. FOX brings back Best Medicine and Doc for their second and third seasons, respectively, while The Voice continues its three-night Season 30 launch. ABC has a new Dancing with the Stars followed by R.J. Decker, and CBS celebrates 30 years of Judge Judy Sheindlin with a primetime special.

Streaming has a few additions worth noting too. Netflix premieres the Italian teen drama Minerva Academy and adds Season 2 of Doc, while HBO premieres the documentary Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie. Basically, if you like doctors, dancing, talent competitions or Judge Judy telling somebody exactly what she thinks of them, Tuesday understood the assignment.

TV Cave Top Pick: Doc

Doc returns for Season 3 tonight at 9 PM ET on FOX, with Molly Parker back as Dr. Amy Larsen. The series began with Amy trying to rebuild her life after a brain injury erased eight years of her memory, and two seasons later, the medical cases may be complicated, but her personal life hasn't exactly become easier. FOX's fall schedule places Doc directly behind Best Medicine, giving the network a full Tuesday night of doctors with wildly different bedside manners.

The premiere, “Wherefore Art Thou,” launches another season of Amy navigating Westside Hospital while continuing to reconcile who she was with the person she's become. And yes, putting Best Medicine and Doc back-to-back is either smart scheduling or FOX gently suggesting we all make an appointment.

Best Medicine Opens Season 2

Best Medicine returns at 8 PM ET on FOX, bringing Martin Best and the residents of Port Wenn, Maine, back for another season. FOX renewed the series after its freshman run and is keeping it paired with Doc, creating a Tuesday block where one doctor is dealing with small-town eccentricity while the other is trying to reconstruct eight missing years of her life.

It's also a good night for viewers who discovered the show late to jump back in. Season 1 established Martin's prickly personality and complicated relationship with the town; Season 2 gets to move beyond introductions and see just how long Port Wenn can tolerate him. Based on Martin, probably not peacefully.

The Voice Keeps the Chairs Turning

After Monday's Season 30 premiere, The Voice returns at 8 PM ET on NBC for Night 2 of the Blind Auditions. Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine are back in the coaches' chairs alongside newcomers Queen Latifah and Riley Green, with Carson Daly returning as host.

NBC is giving the milestone season a three-night launch, so the auditions continue again Wednesday before the show settles into its regular rhythm. Thirty seasons in and NBC still knows exactly how to make those spinning chairs feel like an event.

Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie

HBO's documentary Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie premieres at 9 PM ET and explores the life of Shelley Beattie, the deaf bodybuilder who became widely known as Siren on American Gladiators. Filmmaker Irene Taylor also draws connections between Beattie's experiences and those of Marlee Matlin as two deaf women navigating fame, discrimination and the pressures of a hearing world.

Between two FOX medical shows, The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, America's Got Talent, Judge Judy and R.J. Decker, Tuesday is considerably busier than the average September weeknight. The networks have officially stopped easing us into fall, so the DVR may want to start making some difficult decisions.
