What to Watch Sunday, September 27: MTV VMAs, ‘Lanterns’ & Sunday Night Football

Sunday has one very obvious centerpiece: the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are live tonight, with Snoop Dogg hosting from Los Angeles and Madonna opening the show with her first VMA performance in 23 years. The ceremony begins at 7:30 PM ET on CBS and MTV, with Paramount+ Premium carrying it live. Madonna leads this year's field with 11 nominations, while Taylor Swift follows with nine and Swift's new “Patient Zero” music video is getting its world premiere during the show.

Scripted television isn't completely surrendering the night to music and football. Lanterns reaches its penultimate Season 1 episode on HBO and HBO Max, while American Hostage continues its freshman run on MGM+. CNN has two more installments of The Detour with David Chang, and NBC closes primetime with Rams-Broncos on Sunday Night Football. So yes, the VMAs may own the conversation, but the remote still has work to do.

TV Cave Top Pick: The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards air live tonight from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Snoop Dogg taking over hosting duties. CBS and MTV have the show from 7:30 to 9:30 PM ET, while Paramount+ Premium subscribers can stream it live. CBS is even preempting 60 Minutes for the occasion, so the VMAs are definitely not sneaking quietly onto Sunday's schedule.

The performance lineup gives the night plenty of reasons to watch beyond the actual awards. Madonna opens the ceremony, while LISA, RAYE, Shaboozey, Gunna, GENER8ION, Yung Lean and Sienna Spiro are among the performers. Kacey Musgraves will lead a Dolly Parton tribute, RAYE, sombr and Teddy Swims will honor George Michael, and Nirvana receives the Video Vanguard Award. Then there's Taylor Swift debuting the Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson-starring video for “Patient Zero.” Whew. The VMAs apparently looked at a two-hour runtime and said, “We'll make it fit.”

Lanterns Heads Into Finale Territory

Lanterns returns at 9 PM ET on HBO and HBO Max with Episode 7, leaving only next Sunday's Season 1 finale after tonight. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler have spent the season taking John Stewart and Hal Jordan deeper into the mystery surrounding Rushville, and we're officially past the point where this show can keep casually handing us questions without preparing some answers. The eight-episode season concludes October 4.

That makes tonight particularly interesting after the pieces the series has spent six episodes putting into place. Lanterns began as a murder investigation with a cosmic problem hiding underneath it, but the bigger DC implications have steadily become harder to ignore. With two hours left in the season, the bill for all that mystery is coming due.

Rams and Broncos Take Sunday Night Football

The NFL gets its usual Sunday-night spotlight when the Los Angeles Rams visit the Denver Broncos at 8:20 PM ET on NBC and Peacock. NBC's coverage begins with Football Night in America at 7 PM before kickoff from Denver.

The game caps a full Week 3 Sunday that includes Chargers-Bills, Jets-Lions, Chiefs-Dolphins, Bengals-Steelers and several other afternoon matchups. Translation: if someone in your house has already been watching football since 1 PM, asking for the television back at 7:30 for the VMAs is completely reasonable. They've had six and a half hours. Stand your ground.

David Chang Gets Derailed by Eric André

The Detour with David Chang continues at 10 PM ET on CNN, with David Chang attempting to travel from Miami to Key West alongside Eric André. Chang's original idea is essentially to skip Miami and head toward the Keys. Putting Eric André anywhere near a carefully constructed itinerary, however, was probably the first mistake.

The resulting trip moves through South Florida's food scene before heading south, continuing the show's approach of letting the people, meals and occasional detours dictate the journey rather than treating every destination like another checklist. It's also a pretty good late-night alternative after two hours of VMAs, particularly if you've reached your annual limit for acceptance speeches.

Between the VMAs, the penultimate Lanterns, a full NFL slate and American Hostage, Sunday has considerably more going on than a normal end-of-weekend wind-down. The VMAs are the clear event of the night, though, especially with Madonna opening, Taylor Swift premiering a new video and Snoop Dogg running the whole thing. Monday morning's pop-culture conversation is already booked.
