Viola Davis Is Heading to Paramount+ for New Thriller Ascent—And We're All In

If Viola Davis signs on to a television series, it immediately becomes one to watch. If she stars and executive produces it? Paramount+ has officially greenlit Ascent, a brand-new original thriller that will see the EGOT-winning actress leading what already sounds like one of the streamer's biggest upcoming projects.

Created by Oscar-nominated writer John Logan (Skyfall, Gladiator, Penny Dreadful), Ascent is shaping up to be a sleek, high-stakes character drama with plenty of corporate intrigue, family tension, and the kind of powerhouse performance Davis has built her career on.

According to Paramount+, Davis will portray Catriona Vail, an elite corporate fixer whose job is cleaning up billion-dollar disasters. But when her estranged daughter finds herself in danger, those carefully honed survival skills become intensely personal. The series promises to blend emotional stakes with the cutthroat world of global crisis management, making it much more than your typical corporate thriller.

John Logan will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside Michael Aguilar, while Davis and Julius Tennon executive produce through JuVee Productions. Production is expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027 under Paramount Television Studios.

Davis couldn't hide her excitement about the project, calling the collaboration with Logan "winning the lottery" and praising the series for its bold storytelling and unforgettable characters. Given Logan's résumé and Davis' track record of elevating every role she touches, that's not exactly a difficult sell.

Paramount+ executives are equally confident. Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, described Catriona Vail as a layered and complex character, adding that Davis is the perfect actor to bring her to life. Meanwhile, Paramount Television Studios President Matt Thunell celebrated the opportunity to produce the series on the iconic Paramount lot in Los Angeles while supporting an ambitious original story.

From where we're sitting, Ascent already checks a lot of boxes. The premise feels fresh, stepping away from the familiar police procedurals and spy thrillers dominating television in favor of a corporate fixer navigating impossible situations. That alone makes the series stand out. Add Viola Davis to the equation, and expectations naturally shoot through the roof.

There's also something refreshing about seeing Davis tackle a role that's equal parts strategist, protector, and emotional center. Catriona Vail doesn't sound like someone waiting to be rescued. She sounds like the person everyone else calls when everything has already gone sideways.

The creative team only adds to the excitement. Logan has consistently delivered compelling character-driven stories, particularly in darker, morally complex worlds. Pairing that style with Davis' commanding screen presence feels like one of those combinations that simply makes sense.

Ascent joins an increasingly ambitious Paramount+ lineup that also includes newly announced series like the Clueless sequel event series starring Alicia Silverstone, Laird with Kenneth Branagh, 9/12 featuring Jeremy Strong, Fear Not starring Anne Hathaway, and Discretion with Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning. It's clear the streamer is continuing to invest heavily in prestige television with major star power attached.

No premiere date has been announced yet, and with production scheduled to begin in 2027, fans will have to exercise some patience. Still, when Viola Davis is involved, the wait usually pays off.
