Valentino Founder Valentino Garavani Dies at 93 Leaving Lasting Legacy in Global Fashion

Valentino Garavani, the legendary Italian designer and founder of the Valentino fashion house, has died at the age of 93. His death marks a significant moment in the global fashion industry, closing the chapter on one of Italy’s most influential couture figures whose work shaped luxury fashion for more than six decades.

The Valentino Garavani Foundation confirmed that the designer died on January 19, at his home in Rome. According to the foundation, he passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. No cause of death was disclosed.

Born Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani on May 11, 1932 in Voghera Italy, Garavani studied fashion design in Milan and Paris before launching his own label in Rome in 1960. The Valentino brand quickly gained international recognition for its refined silhouettes, meticulous craftsmanshipmand signature shade known as Valentino red. By the late 1960s, his designs were worn by royalty and prominent public figures, cementing his reputation as a leading couturier.

Over the course of his career, Valentino dressed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and numerous Hollywood stars. His work became closely associated with elegance and formal glamour, influencing red carpet fashion and luxury design standards worldwide. In 2008, Valentino retired from active design, presenting his final haute couture collection in Paris.

In a statement reported by Reuters, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described Garavani as “Valentino, undisputed master of style and elegance and eternal symbol of Italian high fashion. Today Italy loses a legend, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations. Thank you for everything.” Fashion executives and designers also paid formal respects, highlighting his contribution to Made in Italy craftsmanship.

Funeral services are expected to take place in Rome later this week, with further details to be announced by the family. Public commemorations are also being planned to honor his impact on Italian culture and fashion history.
