This week’s all new episode of The Rookie had me on the edge of my seat. Who would’ve thought a simple prison transfer would turn into a crashed plane and a manhunt for prisoners. We also got to meet another relative of Tim’s who we all thought didn’t exist. How exciting?
Inmate Transfer Gone Wrong
This was exciting to watch. It started off as a simple inmate transfer, but then turned into chaos in the sky. One of the officers turned out to be dirty and got a payout from one of the prisoners, Heath Everett, to divert the plane from landing at LAX. One of my favorite scenes was the initial part when the prisoners all escaped and Garza needed the help of all the officers in Mid-Wilshire. I always appreciate a case more when everyone is working together to close a case.
There is one bit that didn’t make sense to me when I first watched this episode; when Tim caught Heath Everett, he tried to bribe Tim into letting him go and Tim wasn’t having it. Good on Tim for not taking that bribe though there was a moment when it looked like he was considering it. As this exchange was happening, I felt like it wasn’t necessary, but then on my second watch I realized this could be foreshadowing another “Greenlight” situation (Season 1, Episode 16). If Heath has enough power to turn a cop dirty, it shouldn’t be a problem to put out a hit on one.
Can I make a confession? I’m over the Oscar bit. It used to be very funny, but now I feel like it’s run its course and we should all move on from him. He’s escaped yet again, but not without giving John a call to taunt him about how he’s going to change and do better with his new found freedom. Can we, finally, keep him away?

Tim’s Mom is Alive and…
The shock on my face when I saw that we finally got to meet Tim’s mother, Joy Bradford. I’ve always been fascinated by Tim’s family dynamic; we got to meet his father, who was a horrible human being. His mom, to me, gave off more of a stranger vibe. Tim seemed uncomfortable with her there, and then things instantly got awkward when Lucy introduced herself and Joy had no idea who she was, not even who she was to Tim. Tim awkwardly tells his mom that he and Lucy are dating and she didn’t seem to want to know more after that.
Lucy wasn’t too thrilled at this revelation, confronting Tim the moment they were alone. Tim’s response being that he isn’t that close to his mom and expecting Lucy to be okay with it only told me that he has more work to do. There’s still more to unpack in his life, and his mom visiting is a great start.
I thought I was going to have to hate her, but her conversation with Lucy was so insightful. She apologized for how she acted towards her and explained how she felt that she failed Tim when he was growing up. Tim took on a lot of the abuse from his father to protect his mother and sister. So much so that it’s difficult for him to be open with her about anything that could become problematic because he doesn’t think she’d be able to handle it. Like everything that’s happened with his ex-wife Isabel, or even the fact that he’s living with and dating Lucy. What if it doesn’t work out? What if it’s not perfect? He seems no point in letting his mother in in such a way, that it’s caused him to be distant.

Tim comes home and finds Lucy and his mother together in the kitchen. What I like that Lucy did in this scene is how she gave Tim space to have a moment with mother, stepping away so that they could have a moment to talk to one another. This is a step in the right direction for the both of them to start the healing process together. I truly hope we get to see more of Joy Bradford.
Nyla Gets a Decision from IA
A part of me was hoping to see this play out on screen, but all we know is Nyla’s meeting with IA went okay and that it’s hard to tell which direction they will go.
Yes, what Nyla did regarding the Liam Glasser case was wrong, but I don’t think it means she should lose her job. It looks like IA agreed; Nyla still gets to be a Detective, but it will now be in a patrolling capacity. This, unfortunately for her, means she will be back in uniform. How long this will be is not determined as of now, but let’s still hope that what Nyla did doesn’t mean Liam Glasser gets to walk.
This was an overall great episode. I wish it came with a warning about the cannibalism we witnessed, but nonetheless, I was entertained beginning to end. What’d you think of this week’s episode of The Rookie? Share your thoughts!
