The whiplash of storylines continue in an all new episode of The Rookie. A lot was going and by the time we got to the halfway point, it felt like I was watching a completely different episode.

For starters, what was Wesley’s case about? I know the name play was meant to make it seem like it was a joke (and I was hoping it was, but no they were serious), but they were serious. It just felt like this case was randomly placed in the episode that I had a hard time focusing on it. Wesley calling Angela his bestie though? I love that. I wish we could see more of the Wopez love this season (and not be left with crumbs of pictures from deleted scenes).

Nolan finds out that he has a new rookie for the day. Another stunt I thought was meant to be an April fools joke, but no, Connor Craig was a transfer that Grey forgot to tell Nolan about. The way the shift was going, I was certain this was Grey pulling a prank pretending like he wasn’t, this poor rookie couldn’t drive, wasn’t well trained when it came to writing a citation/ticket, and failed to back Nolan up at a domestic dispute. This had to be a joke, right?

Nolan goes to Cooper’s old T.O. and facts check everything, but also tells him that he shouldn’t have been taking it easy on Cooper’s training because being unprepared in the field is an easy way to get someone killed. It was a tough shift with Cooper, however, he redeemed himself at the end. Grey made it known that he was doing a great job, but thought he’d thrive better in a slower station and had him transferred. I’m still having trouble seeing Nolan as a good T.O., is that bad?

The promo for this episode gave the sense that there was going to be complete chaos similar to that of the movie The Purge where crime of all kinds is legal for a set amount of hours. This was the result of a social media intern who sought revenge on Tim after she was let go for posting April fools pranks on the LAPD twitter account (I’m not calling it the other thing, sorry). What upset me is that this part of the episode didn’t happen until halfway through – I wish they would’ve focused more on this and had this storyline set up earlier in the episode. I was on the edge of my seat when this part came on.

Mixed into all of this was a domestic violence situation with a couple we met early on in the season. Anita, a friend of James (Nyla’s husband), and her husband, Teddy, fight a lot. He gets violent when he drinks (remember how he was at the Gala? Talk about a foreshadow). This didn’t feel like a story that should’ve come and gone so quickly and it probably would’ve fit best in another episode. Am I alone in thinking this? It was a great build up to this point, but the execution felt so quickly. Teddy has an altercation with Cooper and Nolan and gets himself arrested. Anita goes to bail him out the next day and he’s less than grateful for this and is completely disrespectful to her. You can tell Anita was fed up, which makes what happens next inevitable. Teddy is found killed and Anita is the obvious suspect. She tried to run but was caught (not shown and I feel like it should’ve been) and that’s the close of that case (for now?).

What is going on between Tim and Lucy? Another bit that I was certain would be an April fools gimmick (like one of them was dreaming or something – I don’t know) but no, this really happened too. How is it that these two went from together and happy to constantly arguing and Tim breaking up with Lucy to friends with benefits on Lucy’s terms? I am trying hard to trust the vision here, but I don’t see the direction. Look, Lucy I don’t blame you girl, do what you feel is right for you, however, if you’re going to set boundaries then be firm in them. If you say you want to focus on the Sergeants exam, maybe giving your ex who broke your heart a hall pass isn’t the best way to go about it?

We got close to them having a real conversation about what each of them are feeling and then that all goes away. I need them to circle back on it at some point before this season is over. It’s the best way for them to start a relationship again without any past baggage.

What’d you think of the episode? I think I covered everything, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on last night’s episode of The Rookie
