Hinkley Hills is officially losing its collective mind and honestly? We’re here for the chaos. Peacock’s The 'Burbs just raised the stakes to "frozen spouses and missing brothers."
In Season 1, Episode 6, "Neighbor Take Warning," the series finally pulls back the curtain on the enigmatic Allison, while Samira and Rob trade personality traits in a way that proves paranoia is the ultimate suburban aphrodisiac.
A Mirror Image: Allison’s Backstory and Samira’s Obsession
The episode kicks off by giving us the deep dive we’ve been craving: the Allison and Gary lore. We learn exactly how Allison ended up back in her childhood home but the real kicker is the visual storytelling. There’s a hauntingly perfect parallel as we see Allison staring out her window at the street, a direct mirror of Samira’s own window-watching ritual. It turns out, in Hinkley Hills, the view from the curtains is the only honest perspective you can get.
While Samira (Keke Palmer) is usually the one spiraling into "The Charlie Day Silk String Map" territory, the roles have flipped. Rob (Jack Whitehall) is now the one spiraling, concocting wild theories about what Gary is doing to Allison. It’s a hilarious pivot that shows just how infectious the neighborhood’s "something is wrong" energy truly is.
Operation: Follow the Gary
When Samira’s brother Langston drops by, he’s (rightfully) alarmed by his sister’s unhinged phone calls. In a classic "you people need a hobby" move, he insists Samira and Rob take a day off while he babysits. Naturally, "taking a day off" in a mystery thriller translates to "plotting a multi-pronged surveillance mission."
The crew meets with Naveen to hatch a plan. The strategy? Samira and Rob tail Gary, while Naveen attempts to get some alone time with Allison. Todd and Dana, our favorite chaotic duo, act as the lookouts.
The confrontation at the bar is where the episode flips the script. Instead of the villainous kidnapper Rob imagined, Gary reveals he’s a man possessed by grief. His brother went missing and he doesn’t buy the generic "I’m leaving" letter left behind for a second. It turns out Gary isn’t a predator; he’s a vigilante in a polo shirt.
Secrets in the Suburbs: The Freezer and the Affair
While the "A-Team" is at the bar, Allison drops a bombshell on Naveen: Gary is actually helping her. They’ve discovered a pattern of multiple residents disappearing, all leaving behind the exact same type of suspicious note. Hinkley Hills isn’t just weird; it’s a factory for forced exits.
Meanwhile, back at the cul-de-sac, Langston tries to help Todd and Dana dig for info, which leads to the episode's most "TV-MA" moment. Dana and Todd stumble upon Lynn’s literal "cold" secret: she has her dead husband, Marty, tucked away in the freezer.
But wait, there's more! Lynn discovers that Marty was a terrible husband in life; he was having an affair with Agnes, the HOA president from hell.
The Hinkley Hills Fallout
Just as we think Gary is our new hero, the episode ends on a brutal cliffhanger: Gary gets knocked out cold.
"Neighbor Take Warning" is full of "everyone is a suspect" back and forth. It successfully turned Gary from a creep into a comrade, gave us a chilling villain in and reminded us all to never, ever look in a neighbor's freezer.
