St. Denis Medical Season 3 Adds Jimmy Smits, Tony Hawk, and More

Well, well, well! Things at St. Denis are about to get a little more interesting, and for once, we're not talking about another medical disaster or somebody making a questionable decision in the emergency room. Emmy-winning actor Jimmy Smits is joining St. Denis Medical for Season 3, and his character might be bringing a little romance to the hospital.
According to the latest casting announcement, Smits will guest-star as Javier, a charming professional visiting St. Denis who immediately hits it off with hospital administrator Joyce, played by Wendi McLendon-Covey. Now, that sounds innocent enough until you remember what happened between Joyce and Dr. Ron during the Season 2 finale. Oh, this could get messy!
Joyce Has Options, and Ron Might Have a Problem
Let's not forget that Ron, played by David Alan Grier, made quite the confession after undergoing heart surgery. While recovering from anesthesia, he accidentally revealed his feelings for Joyce, leaving us wondering whether the two longtime colleagues might finally explore something beyond their usual workplace dynamic.
And now here comes Javier, apparently ready to charm his way into Joyce's orbit. The timing couldn't be more interesting, especially since Ron's unexpected confession introduced a romantic possibility that neither character had fully addressed.
Of course, there's no confirmation that Javier will become a serious love interest or that the series is setting up a full-blown triangle. But a charming new arrival immediately connecting with Joyce while Ron's feelings linger in the background? The writers certainly know how to get us asking questions.
Smits brings decades of television experience to the role, with memorable performances in NYPD Blue, L.A. Law, The West Wing, and Sons of Anarchy. Seeing him step into the show's workplace comedy chaos should be entertaining, especially opposite McLendon-Covey.
And Jimmy Smits Isn't the Only Guest Star
Season 3 is also welcoming professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, who will play Kyle, an amateur skateboarder returning to the hospital after yet another injury. Apparently, even when you know your way around a skateboard, common sense doesn't always come along for the ride.
Martha Kelly will appear as Gail, the hospital's in-house counsel, who helps the staff navigate a lawsuit. Jon Barinholtz is also joining as Alan, a father trying to remain positive while his wife receives medical care and their young son deals with hearing loss.
Damon Wayans is scheduled to appear in the Season 3 premiere as Dr. Highland, a charismatic new physician filling in for Ron while he recovers. His arrival reunites him with David Alan Grier, his former In Living Color co-star, which should make for another entertaining television reunion.
When Does St. Denis Medical Return?
St. Denis Medical returns Monday, November 2, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, with new episodes streaming the following day on Peacock.
Between Ron's recovery, Matt and Serena's developing relationship, and Joyce potentially catching Javier's attention, the hospital staff has plenty of personal drama waiting for them. And considering these people can barely make it through a normal shift without something going spectacularly wrong, we can't imagine romance will make their lives any easier.
As for Ron, he might want to figure out exactly what he wants before somebody else makes a move. Because Javier is coming, Joyce is apparently catching his eye, and the doctor might discover that recovering from surgery is the least complicated part of his season.
