Serious sheriff in tan uniform with M. Fox name tag stands in a softly lit office, looking off-camera.

Sheriff Country really looked us in the eye, promised a dramatic rescue, and then pulled the rug right out from under us. Season 2, Episode 3, “Ulysses,” delivers a dangerous drug investigation, a heartbreaking family revelation, and a rescue mission that goes completely sideways. And just when I thought Mickey Fox was finally going to catch a break, the episode ended with one very important question: Where the hell is Wes?!

The CBS drama continues to build on its human-trafficking storyline while giving us a better understanding of Mickey's complicated relationship with her mother, Maria. Between the escalating danger in Edgewater and the emotional baggage this family has been carrying, there was already plenty to unpack. But that final twist? Oh, we're going to need some answers.

Cyclone Is Taking Over Edgewater

Sheriff Mickey Fox and her team are working overtime to stop Cyclone, a dangerous street drug making its way through the local college community. What initially looks like another drug investigation quickly connects to the much larger human-trafficking operation involving the Bulgarians.

Boone and Cassidy discover that a cashier at the college bookstore has been distributing the drug to students by hiding it inside the pages of a specific book. The investigation takes an even darker turn when they discover that the cashier's sister is among the women being trafficked in Deadwater. Suddenly, the bookstore isn't just a distribution point. It's another piece of an increasingly disturbing criminal network.

Boone and Cassidy stake out the bookstore, eventually catching one of the Bulgarians' henchmen and convincing him to cooperate. It's a much-needed breakthrough for Mickey's team, especially with Wes missing and the trafficking operation becoming increasingly dangerous.

I appreciate how Sheriff Country continues connecting these investigations rather than treating every crime as a separate case of the week. Cyclone isn't simply a problem affecting college students. Its distribution is tied to the same criminal organization that has already put vulnerable women in danger and now threatens Mickey's own family.

Maria Finally Explains Herself

While the investigation unfolds, Maria delivers news Mickey desperately doesn't want to hear: Wes has been taken. Given everything these two women have already been through, this is hardly the kind of mother-daughter bonding experience anyone had in mind.

But what follows becomes one of the episode's most emotional moments. Maria finally explains why she never returned to Mickey sooner. According to her, three handlers kept her under their control, leaving her unable to escape until all three had died. It's a devastating revelation that completely changes the context of her absence.

For Mickey, there's a difference between believing her mother chose to stay away and learning that she may never have had the freedom to return. That distinction doesn't magically erase years of abandonment, resentment, and unanswered questions, but it certainly opens the door to a relationship neither woman seemed capable of having before.

What makes this scene work is that it doesn't need to resolve everything immediately. Mickey has spent years living with the consequences of Maria's absence, and one emotional conversation shouldn't make all that pain disappear. Still, seeing these two women reach even the beginning of an understanding gives their relationship somewhere meaningful to go.

With Wes now in danger, Mickey and Maria also find themselves facing a frightening possibility: just as they're beginning to rebuild their family, they could lose another piece of it.

Wes Is Fighting for His Life

Meanwhile, Wes is having what might qualify as the worst family emergency imaginable. After being taken by the Bulgarians, he's brought to their marijuana-growing operation, where his ability to fix their grow becomes his greatest advantage. Rather than immediately trying to fight his way out, Wes uses his knowledge to make himself useful. He repairs the grow operation, earns a degree of trust, and buys himself some much-needed time. Considering the people he's dealing with, that's a pretty smart survival strategy.

While there, Wes meets one of the women being trafficked, and the two begin working on an escape plan. Instead of focusing solely on saving himself, he recognizes an opportunity to help someone else get out of a horrific situation.

Unfortunately, their plan doesn't stay secret for long. Sonny's mother catches Wes, and things go downhill fast. The Bulgarians prepare to torture him, making it painfully clear that his usefulness only protects him for so long. Just when it seems like Wes has run out of options, Mickey and the cavalry arrive. Finally! The dramatic rescue we've been waiting for!

Or so I thought.

That Ending Was Just Wrong!

Mickey and her team storm the location, and a shootout erupts. With the cavalry arriving just as Wes is about to be tortured, everything points toward a dramatic reunion between father and daughter. Except that's not what happens.

When the dust settles, Wes and the trafficked women are gone. No reunion, no relieved embrace, and certainly no explanation for where they've disappeared to. Mickey, Maria, and the rest of the team are left standing there trying to figure out what happened, and quite frankly, so am I. I genuinely expected them to find Wes. The entire episode seemed to be building toward his rescue, especially after the bookstore investigation finally gave Mickey's team the information they needed to move against the Bulgarians. Instead, Sheriff Country decided that one cliffhanger wasn't enough and handed us another.

Now I'm wondering just how long this storyline is going to continue. Are we talking another episode or two, or are we about to spend half the season searching for Wes? Because I thought we were getting answers tonight, not an entirely new collection of questions. And what exactly happened to him and the women? Did their escape plan somehow work before Mickey arrived? Were they moved somewhere else? The episode leaves those possibilities hanging without giving us enough information to settle on an answer. Whatever happened, the mystery just became considerably more personal.

Final Thoughts

“Ulysses” is another strong installment of Sheriff Country, particularly because it understands that the emotional consequences of an investigation can be just as compelling as the investigation itself. The Cyclone storyline gives Boone and Cassidy something substantial to do while expanding the scope of the trafficking operation. Wes proves he's resourceful under pressure, and Maria's explanation offers the first real opportunity for Mickey to reconsider everything she believed about her mother's disappearance.

But it's that final sequence that takes the episode from an engaging hour of television to one that leaves you staring at the screen wondering what just happened. I went into those final moments expecting Mickey to rescue her father. Instead, she's left with an empty compound, missing trafficking victims, and absolutely no idea where Wes has gone. And after finally making emotional progress with Maria, she now faces the possibility of losing the father who's been part of her life all along.

Sheriff Country, I was prepared for a rescue, not another missing-person mystery. You'd better have a good explanation for this one, because if we're still looking for Wes halfway through the season, Mickey won't be the only person losing her patience.
