‘Law & Order: SVU’ Is Bringing Back Stephanie March as Alexandra Cabot, and It’s About Time!

Well, look who is making her way back into Olivia Benson's orbit! Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is reaching into its very impressive history and bringing back a familiar face that longtime fans have been missing for years. Stephanie March is officially returning as Alexandra Cabot in Season 28, and suddenly, we're feeling a little nostalgic for the days when Cabot was making prosecutors nervous and challenging Benson's decisions.
According to reports published Friday, October 23, March will reprise her beloved role in the ninth episode of the current season. This will mark her first appearance on the NBC drama since 2018, although exactly what brings Cabot back remains a mystery. Considering how things ended the last time we saw her, we're betting this reunion won't be all hugs and happy memories.
Alexandra Cabot Has Quite the SVU History
March originally joined SVU during Season 2 in 2000, becoming one of the show's most recognizable assistant district attorneys. Cabot was sharp, determined, and certainly wasn't afraid to challenge detectives when their investigations threatened to create courtroom disasters. She also had a complicated relationship with the justice system, something that eventually took her career in unexpected directions.
And let's not forget that this woman once had to fake her own death! Cabot entered witness protection after becoming the target of a dangerous criminal, only to resurface and eventually return to her prosecutorial duties. Her storyline alone has enough twists to fill another crime drama.
When Cabot last appeared in Season 19's "Sunk Cost Fallacy," she was no longer working as a traditional prosecutor. Instead, she had become involved in helping abuse victims escape dangerous situations, sometimes using methods that put her at odds with Benson. Their disagreement raised some uncomfortable questions about whether following the law always produces justice.
Could Cabot and Benson Clash Again?
Now, here's where things get interesting. Olivia Benson has spent nearly three decades fighting for survivors, and anyone who has watched her long enough knows she isn't exactly famous for backing down when she believes she's right.
Cabot shares that determination, but these two women haven't always agreed on how far someone should go to protect a victim. With Benson continuing to face difficult ethical decisions in Season 28, bringing Cabot back could reopen that conversation in a fascinating way.
Of course, nothing has been revealed about Cabot's actual storyline, so we're not declaring another showdown just yet. But would we complain about watching Mariska Hargitay and Stephanie March go toe-to-toe again? Absolutely not.
Cabot's return also continues the show's recent embrace of familiar faces. Christopher Meloni is returning as Elliot Stabler for the milestone 600th episode, scheduled for November 12. Between Stabler and Cabot, SVU is certainly giving longtime fans plenty of reasons to tune in.
An exact airdate for Cabot's appearance hasn't been announced, but we're already curious about what her return means for Benson and the squad. Eight years is a long time, and Alexandra Cabot has never been the type to show up without a compelling reason. Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, with episodes streaming the following day on Peacock.
