Sally Kirkland, Oscar-Nominated Actress and Star of Anna, Dies at 84

Sally Kirkland, the veteran actress best known for her Academy Award-nominated performance in the 1987 film Anna, has died at the age of 84. Her manager confirmed that she passed away on November 11 in Palm Springs, California, where she had been receiving hospice care following a series of health complications.


Kirkland’s health had been in decline for more than a year. Reports noted that she had suffered multiple fractures, battled infections, and was diagnosed with dementia. In late 2024, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help cover her medical expenses and long-term care needs.



Born in New York City in 1941, Kirkland built a career spanning more than six decades across film, television, and theater. She gained international recognition for her lead role in Anna, which earned her both an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win. The performance became a defining moment in her career, establishing her as a respected and uncompromising performer.


In addition to Anna, Kirkland appeared in a wide range of projects including The Sting, JFK, Private Benjamin, and Bruce Almighty. On television, she made guest appearances on shows such as Murder, She Wrote, Three’s Company, and Days of Our Lives.
