RJ Decker Premiere Recap: Scott Speedman’s Florida Noir Is a Sweaty, Sinister Ride

Man in a patterned shirt reads a document in a warmly lit room with wooden walls and a window in the background, creating a contemplative mood.

If you thought Florida couldn’t get any weirder, the RJ Decker premiere on ABC just proved that the Sunshine State still has plenty of swamp water and secrets to spare. Based on the cynical, sun-drenched world of Carl Hiaasen, the series kicked off its debut episode, “Double Exposure,” with enough sweat, betrayal, and questionable life choices to keep any TV junkie hooked. Scott Speedman stars as the titular Decker, a disgraced photojournalist who seems to have a supernatural talent for stepping into piles of trouble—and we aren’t just talking about the sinkhole that swallowed his trailer.

A Courthouse Romance Gone Wrong

The episode wasted no time establishing Decker’s brand of luck. Minutes before a sentencing hearing for an assault charge, our "hero" decides the best way to calm his nerves is a quick tryst in his car with a mysterious stranger, Emi Ochoa (Jaina Lee Ortiz). In a twist that everyone but Decker saw coming, Emi turns out to be the sister of the man he allegedly beat up. Her subsequent testimony, dripping with manufactured tears and calculated lies, sends Decker straight to the state penitentiary for an eighteen-month stint. It’s a masterclass in why you should never mix business with pleasure in a courthouse parking lot.

Life After the Big House

Fast forward past the orange jumpsuits, and we find a post-prison Decker trying to rebuild a life that was already a mess. With his home literally gone, shoutout to the Florida geology for that sinkhole, he ends up living in his ex-wife’s pool house. Adelaide Clemens plays Catherine, the long-suffering ex who has clearly moved on to a much more stable life with her new wife, Detective Mel Abreu (Bevin Bru). The dynamic between this awkward trio is one of the premiere's highlights, offering a sharp, snarky counterbalance to the humidity-soaked noir vibe.

The Mystery Begins

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Florida PI drama without a body. Decker stumbles into a case involving a corpse in a trunk that mirrors an unsolved murder from his past. When Emi Ochoa resurfaces, now claiming she wants to help him take down the corrupt men who set him up, the stage is set for a season of double-crosses and swamp justice.

The premiere successfully balanced the gritty reality of a man losing everything with the dark, eccentric humor Hiaasen fans expect. While Decker might be a disaster in a Hawaiian shirt, he’s the kind of disaster that makes for excellent television. As the mystery of Clay Gregory and the "trunk body" unfolds, one thing is certain: in this show, the only thing more dangerous than the criminals is the heat.
