Review: Brooke Shields Slays in Acorn TV’s ‘You’re Killing Me’: A Cozy Mystery with Real Bite

Two women with flashlights express surprise in a dim room filled with boxes. One woman wears a blazer, the other a dark sweater.

If you’re looking for a reason to cancel your weekend plans and rot on the couch with a glass of wine, Acorn TV just handed it to you on a silver platter. Their latest original series, You’re Killing Me, managed to land on my screen for an early look and I’m happy to report it’s the exact kind of fun murder mystery we’ve been craving. It’s light, it’s witty and it doesn’t take itself so seriously that you feel like you’re doing homework.

The Dynamic Duo You Didn’t Know You Needed

The show centers on Allie Chandler (Brooke Shields), a bestselling crime novelist who is, let’s be polite, realizing that the publishing world thinks she’s aging out of her own genre. To stay relevant, she teams up with Andi (Amalia Williamson), a Gen Z true-crime podcaster who probably thinks a typewriter is a decorative antique.

The "boomer vs. zoomer" trope can often feel forced, but here it actually works. Brooke Shields is genuinely funnier than I expected; she leans into the neuroses of a writer with perfect comedic timing. Her chemistry with Williamson feels natural rather than scripted, providing a solid anchor for the show’s more ridiculous moments. It’s a relevant enough hook to keep you tuning in episode after episode.

Life After Central City

For the fellow nerds in the room, the biggest draw might be seeing Tom Cavanagh back on screen. After spending nine seasons on The Flash playing roughly four dozen different versions of Harrison Wells, it is a relief to see him in a role that doesn't involve a multiverse.

Cavanagh plays Detective Jack Kerrigan, and while he’s great at playing a grounded, small-town cop, let’s be honest, he will always be Wells to us. You don’t necessarily "see" Wells while he’s on screen, he disappears into the character well enough but the ghost of S.T.A.R. Labs is definitely hovering in the back of your mind. Still, seeing him trade technobabble for police procedurals is a welcome change of pace.

Small Town Secrets

The series is set in Founders’ Cove, a New England town so quaint it practically screams "someone is getting murdered behind that gazebo." If you’re a sucker for a picturesque location with cobblestone streets and dark secrets hiding behind white picket fences, this hits the spot. It captures that classic "cozy" vibe without feeling too precious or Hallmark-adjacent.

You’re Killing Me is a breezy, engaging watch that proves Brooke Shields still has the leading-lady chops to carry a franchise. It’s the perfect weekend binge for anyone who likes their homicide served with a side of dry humor.

You’re Killing Me premieres on Acorn TV on May 18th.
