Reports of Deborah Vance’s Death Are Greatly Exaggerated: Hacks Final Season Trailer Is Here

Two women in an elevator, one in a sparkly dress posing for cameras. Bold red "Hacks" text and "max Original" logo on backdrop.

She’s alive! Well, mostly. In a development that will shock absolutely no one who saw the Season 4 finale, the legendary Deborah Vance is not, in fact, decomposing in Singapore. The final trailer for Hacks Season 5 dropped today, and it’s exactly the brand of chaotic, sequin-clad resurrection we’ve been waiting for. After a cliffhanger that had Ava (Hannah Einbinder) spiraling over a premature TMZ obituary, the comedy duo is back in Las Vegas to reclaim a legacy that was almost literally buried.

A Legacy on the Brink: What the Trailer Tells Us

Picking up directly from the aftermath of "Heaven," the Season 5 trailer opens with Deborah (Jean Smart) returning to her mansion only to find her gates turned into a makeshift shrine of flowers and dolls. It seems the "death" of Deborah Vance was the best thing to happen to her PR since she slapped a soda out of a child’s hand.

However, the "rebirth" isn't all standing ovations. The trailer highlights the massive legal hurdle established at the end of last season: an ironclad 18-month non-compete clause. Deborah reveals that if she tells even one single joke, she risks going to jail. Naturally, this leads to a press conference where she’s more combative than ever, shimmying in a playing-card dress and fearing that the industry isn’t just rewriting her history, they’re erasing it.

The Final Bow: Dates and Details

This is the end of the road for our favorite toxic workplace duo. HBO Max has confirmed that Season 5 will be the show's final outing, a plan the creators have apparently had in the works since 2015.

  • Premiere Date: Thursday, April 9, 2026 (two-episode debut).

  • Episode Count: 10 episodes in total.

  • Release Schedule: Weekly releases, including double episodes on April 30 and May 7.

  • Series Finale: Thursday, May 28, 2026.

Returning Legends and New Blood

Alongside the Emmy-winning power of Smart and Einbinder, the usual suspects are back. Paul W. Downs and Megan Stalter return as Jimmy and Kayla, hopefully still failing upward, along with Carl Clemons-Hopkins and Christopher McDonald.

The guest list for this final swan song is predictably stacked. Joining the fray is Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty), alongside returning favorites like Kaitlin Olson, Tony Goldwyn, and Helen Hunt. Rumors are also swirling about potential heavy-hitters like Ann Dowd and Cherry Jones making appearances to help Deborah "rewrite" her narrative.

The TV Cave's Take

If you thought Season 4 was a rollercoaster, buckle up. The trailer promises the "Hacks special"—which means we’re going to laugh at Deborah’s cruelty and then cry when she realizes Ava is the only person who actually likes her. It’s a bittersweet farewell, but as Einbinder recently noted, it’s better to not overstay your welcome.

So, clear your Thursdays starting April 9. Deborah Vance is ready for her final act, and we’re just here to make sure she doesn’t actually die this time.

Do you think Deborah and Ava will finally find a healthy balance, or is a nuclear fallout the only way this show can truly end?
