Matt Shade and Angie Everett moved across the country, got married, had a baby and supposedly left private investigation behind. “Changing Tides” needs roughly one date night to prove neither of them was fooling anybody.

Private Eyes West Coast catches up with Shade and Angie in Victoria, where they are attempting something dangerously close to normal adulthood. Angie still has investigative instincts running through her veins, while Shade has moved into the author phase of his life and seems determined to convince himself that chasing criminals belongs in the past. They even try having dinner without talking about their children, which is adorable and completely doomed.

While at the restaurant, Angie runs into her friend Priya, who is there with her boyfriend, Ben. The reunion barely has time to register before screaming erupts and Angie and Shade discover Priya standing near Ben’s body with a knife in her hand. From the police perspective, this one practically comes gift-wrapped, but Angie knows Priya and refuses to believe she killed Ben.

Shade initially tries to remind his wife that they intentionally walked away from this life, partly because he wants to be more present for their family than he was earlier in his life. That commitment lasts until the next morning, when he is already investigating alongside Angie because old habits really did not put up much of a fight.

Ben turns out to be a wealthy real-estate businessman, which gives Shade and Angie several places to look for enemies. His business partner Molina quickly moves up the list when they learn Ben was preparing to deliver bad news about a deal, but nothing about the case stays simple for long.

Their investigation sends them right back into the ridiculous undercover schemes and barely legal shortcuts that made Private Eyes fun in the first place. At one point, they resort to spying from a window-washing platform before breaking into an office, because apparently moving to Victoria did absolutely nothing for their impulse control.

Ben’s son Zack also becomes suspicious after Shade and Angie uncover cocaine connected to him. Zack insists he did not kill his father and points them toward Amrit, sending the couple down another path that ultimately eliminates both men as the murderer.

Detective Violet Xiao repeatedly tells Shade and Angie to stop interfering, which of course only makes them interfere harder. When Priya is formally charged after police discover that Ben named her as a beneficiary, Shade and Angie realize they need access to information inside Violet’s investigation.

Will helps create a distraction, allowing Shade to sneak into Violet’s office and take paperwork connected to the case. Some couples book a massage when they need quality time. These two commit minor procedural violations together.

The breakthrough finally comes from something Angie noticed the night Ben died: shoes. Looking through photographs, Angie realizes Siobhan was wearing different shoes than the pair Angie saw earlier, and that inconsistency opens the door to a much bigger revelation.

Shade and Angie eventually uncover that Siobhan and Ben were secretly having an affair. Once the pieces fall into place, Siobhan is exposed as Ben’s killer and Priya is cleared, proving Angie was right to trust her instincts from the beginning.

Solving the case also forces Shade and Angie to admit what has been obvious all episode: they miss this. They miss working together, helping people and following a trail everyone else has overlooked until the answer finally clicks into place.

By the end of “Changing Tides,” Shade has secured a business license and the two are officially back in the private-investigation game. Their attempt at a quieter life in Victoria may be over before it really started, but Private Eyes West Coast makes a pretty convincing case that this is exactly where Shade and Angie belong. Victoria probably has no idea what just happened to it.
