CIA Season 2 Premiere Recap: Bill Learns His Father Was Hiding a Huge Secret in “The Deep”

FBI agent questions two men in a narrow alley, one leaning against the wall, with a warning notice on the brick background.

CIA begins Season 2 with Bill Goodman returning to work while carrying something he absolutely has not processed yet. His father recently died after battling cancer, and while Bill insists he is ready to get back to business, the premiere makes it pretty clear that grief is riding shotgun whether he acknowledges it or not.

Colin certainly notices. After Bill ignores his calls and messages, Colin handles concern in the most Colin way possible: by appearing in the back of Bill’s car and scaring the life out of him. There is genuine affection underneath the nonsense, though. Colin wanted to be there for his friend, and Bill’s insistence on immediately burying himself in work does not fool him.

The case waiting for them involves Lalo Cabrera, a known fixer for a Colombian cartel who has arrived in New York. The team tracks him to a property where they find something much more troubling than cartel business: the body of a DEA agent.

That discovery opens up an old mess involving DEA agents, stolen cartel money and a mission that went very wrong. The team eventually learns that several agents previously stole money during an operation, and one of the men involved, Gary Martin, has been living with the guilt ever since. Gary helped transport the money but has spent years haunted by what happened, particularly the killing of a teenage soldier during the theft.

With one of the former agents now dead, Gary finally reaches a point where keeping quiet is no longer an option.

Gary cooperates and asks to attend the funeral, which also gives the team an opportunity to draw out Vincente, an assassin connected to the killings. Their plan works, but catching him is another story.

Vincente makes his move as Gary leaves the funeral, and Bill intervenes before Gary can be killed. A chase follows, eventually ending with Vincente jumping into the river and disappearing. There is no body, and nobody should need a procedural-drama handbook to know what that usually means. The team recovers the stolen money and closes the immediate case, but the man they really needed slips away. More importantly, Bill’s emotional state nearly affects the operation, forcing Colin to cover for his partner while quietly recognizing that Bill is not nearly as okay as he wants everyone to believe.

And then we get the reveal that turns Season 2 into something much more personal. While going through his father’s belongings, Bill finds a plane ticket from 1998 to Tbilisi, Georgia. The trip makes no sense based on the life Bill thought his father lived, so he mentions it to Colin. Colin initially brushes off the mystery in front of Bill, then does exactly what Colin does best and starts digging behind his back.

With Nikki’s help, he accesses information tied to Operation Panama. What he uncovers completely changes Bill’s understanding of the man who raised him. Bill’s father worked for the CIA.

That revelation closes “The Deep,” but the premiere also quietly connects the season’s two stories. Vincente is still out there, and the assassin appears to have links to Bill’s father’s past, meaning the man who escaped may also be the key to learning what Bill’s father actually did.

So much for easing back into work.
