Peacock’s ‘The Good Daughter’ Trailer Turns a Family’s Past Into a New Nightmare

Two worried women stand outdoors in a garden, looking offscreen; one wears a dark sleeveless top, the other a gray T-shirt.

Peacock has released the official trailer for The Good Daughter, and if this family thought 20 years was enough time to put the worst night of their lives behind them, they were very, very wrong. The six-episode limited series stars Meghann Fahy and Rose Byrne as sisters Charlotte and Samantha Quinn, whose already-complicated relationship gets pulled back into the trauma that changed their family forever.

Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling novel, The Good Daughter follows Charlotte and Samantha two decades after a violent attack shattered their lives. Charlotte stayed closer to home and became a lawyer like their father, Rusty, while Samantha built a very different life away from Pikeville, but another horrifying crime is about to make distance from the past a whole lot harder.

The new trailer makes it clear that Charlotte is going to be right in the middle of the latest nightmare. She becomes a witness to a deadly attack in her hometown, setting off an investigation that forces her to confront memories she has spent years trying to live with while raising plenty of new questions about what is happening in Pikeville now.

And then there is Samantha, because apparently one traumatized Quinn sister was never going to be enough for this story. Byrne’s character is pulled back into the orbit of the family she left behind, bringing Charlotte and Samantha together again as the new investigation begins exposing connections to secrets neither woman has truly escaped. Their relationship looks every bit as important as the mystery itself, with the trailer leaning hard into everything that can happen when two sisters share the same trauma but spend years dealing with it in completely different ways.

Brendan Gleeson stars as their father, Rusty Quinn, another major piece of the increasingly messy family puzzle. The cast also includes Olivia Williams, Harper Steele, Michael Dorman, Audrey Grace Marshall and Drew Cheek, giving the limited series a pretty stacked ensemble surrounding Fahy and Byrne.

Slaughter is doing more than handing her novel over for an adaptation, too. She wrote all six episodes, serves as showrunner and executive producer, while Steph Green directs the entire limited series and also executive produces alongside Slaughter, Byrne, Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky and Casey Haver.

What stands out most about the trailer is how little The Good Daughter appears interested in being just another murder mystery. There is obviously a crime at the center of the story, but the more interesting question may be what happens when Charlotte and Samantha are forced to look at their family, their childhood and each other without the protection that 20 years of distance gave them.

That combination of family drama, buried secrets and a murder investigation feels right at home for Slaughter, whose work also includes the novels behind Netflix’s Pieces of Her and ABC’s Will Trent. With Fahy and Byrne leading the series and Gleeson thrown into the Quinn family mess with them, Peacock may have a particularly nasty little November binge waiting for us.

All six episodes of The Good Daughter premiere Thursday, November 12, exclusively on Peacock. Unlike some of Peacock’s weekly releases, viewers will be able to dive into the entire mystery at once.
