Off Campus Just Became One of Prime Video’s Biggest Hits Ever — Third-Biggest Series Debut

Amazon Prime Video just found its new golden goose and it is wearing hockey skates. The streaming giant announced that its new college romance drama, Off Campus, officially locked in the third-largest series debut in the platform's history. Pulling in a massive 36 million viewers globally in its first 12 days, the show only trails behind mega-budget titans The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout.
For anyone who has spent more than five minutes scrolling through BookTok, this news is about as surprising as a Targaryen saying Dracarys. Based on Elle Kennedy’s bestselling romance novels, the series focuses on college drama, sports culture, and the ultimate trope: the fake-dating scheme (we see you Bridgerton). It turns out that pairing a brooding athlete with a sharp-witted music major is exactly what the internet ordered.
The Numbers Don't Lie (Even If the Characters Do)
Prime Video has spent billions trying to attract fantasy nerds and action junkies with The Boys and Reacher. Yet, it is the locker-room romance that is currently skating circles around them. Not only did Off Campus secure the bronze medal for all-time Prime Video debuts, but it also completely shattered records for the 18-to-34 female demographic.
The story follows Hannah Wells (Ella Bright), a college student who needs help catching the eye of her crush, and Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli), the arrogant hockey captain who needs to fix his GPA. They strike a deal to fake-date, and—shocker—genuine feelings get in the way. It is a predictable formula, but the adaptation leans so hard into its own melodrama that you cannot help but binge the entire thing in one sitting.
A Adaptation That Actually Works
Adapting a book series as popular as this one is usually a recipe for fan outrage, but Off Campus manages to hit the right notes. Bright plays Hannah with enough spine to keep the character from becoming a total pushover, while Cameli handles Garrett’s transition from smarmy jock to lovesick puppy with surprising charm. The chemistry is there, the dialogue is snappy, and the production values actually make Briar University look like a real place rather than a cheap Hollywood set.
The show does not try to be high-ranking television and that is its best strength. It embraces the over the topness of college sports stardom, the overly dramatic house parties and the tension that never lets up of the "will-they-won't-they" dynamic. It is self-aware enough to know exactly what it is: a glossy, high-energy romance that delivers exactly what the fans wanted.
The Verdict
Amazon was clearly confident in this setup, having already greenlit Season 2 before the pilot even premiered. With millions of fans already hooked, the gamble hit the mark. Off Campus proves that sometimes, fans just want good old-fashioned romance and a bit of campus drama.
