Grab your Scooby Snacks and prepare for a heavy dose of nostalgia or a mild existential crisis because the Netflix Scooby-Doo cast has finally been unmasked. After months of rumors and fan-casting that mostly involved begging for Matthew Lillard’s eternal youth, the streaming giant has officially revealed the fresh faces tasked with driving the Mystery Machine into a new era.
This isn't your parents' cartoon. Netflix is aiming for a modern origin story that feels a bit more Riverdale and a bit less "guy in a rubber mask." The new lineup features a mix of rising stars and established genre veterans, signaling that the platform is betting big on the Great Dane’s staying power.
Meet the New Mystery Inc.
The casting directors clearly did their homework, pulling talent from some of the biggest franchises in recent years. Leading the pack as Daphne Blake is Mckenna Grace, who has basically spent her entire childhood fighting ghosts (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) and slashers (Scream 7). If anyone can make a purple headband look formidable while staring down a swamp monster, it’s her.
Stepping into the ascot of Fred Jones is Maxwell Jenkins. Known for playing Will Robinson in Lost in Space, Jenkins is trading intergalactic peril for a van and a clipboard. Hopefully, his version of Fred has more personality than a wet paper towel—a trap previous live-action iterations have occasionally fallen into.
Then there’s Velma Dinkley, played by Abby Ryder Fortson. Fresh off her acclaimed turn in Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Fortson brings a grounded, intellectual energy to the group’s resident genius. Rounding out the humans is Tanner Hagen as Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. Hagen has the unenviable task of following Lillard’s iconic performance, but his work in The Pitt suggests he has the "terrified but hungry" vibe down to a science.

A New Twist on an Old Tail
The series, developed by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, isn't just rehashing the "monster of the week" formula. Set during the group's final summer at camp, the plot kicks off when a stray Great Dane puppy (who may have witnessed a literal murder) brings this motley crew together.
It’s a bold swing for a franchise that usually plays it safe. By leaning into a more serialized, slightly darker tone, Netflix is clearly trying to age up the brand. And for the purists? Legend Frank Welker is expected to return as the voice of Scooby, ensuring the heart of the show remains intact even if the vibes are edgier.
With production kicking off this April in Atlanta, the countdown to the 2027 premiere has officially begun. Whether this reimagining becomes a cult classic or another "Zoinks!"-worthy stumble remains to be seen, but with a cast this talented, the clues are looking promising.
