In a casting move that feels like a fever dream for anyone who came of age in the ‘80s, Molly Ringwaldis officially joining the cast of Yellowjackets for its fourth and final season. Because if there is one thing this show was missing besides a consistent supply of moisturizer and a therapist who isn’t a cult leader, it was the ultimate teen queen herself.
The Brat Pack Meets the Snack Pack
Showtime and Paramount+ have confirmed that Ringwald will step into the role of Vicky, the mother of Van (played in the present day by Lauren Ambrose). For those keeping score at home, adding Ringwald to a cast that already includes Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, and Melanie Lynskey completes the "Coolest Women of Gen-X" bingo card we didn’t know we were playing.
Ringwald’s Vicky is reportedly a recently recovered alcoholic on a mission to make amends for her past. This is Yellowjackets, however, so "making amends" usually involves a side of trauma and potentially a suspicious tea blend. Given the show’s penchant for non-linear storytelling, the big question is which timeline Vicky will haunt.
Where Does She Fit?
Since adult Van met a rather final end in the Season 3 finale—rest in peace to the only person who could pull off a thrift-store flannel, Vicky’s appearance suggests a heavy focus on the immediate aftermath of the girls' rescue in the late '90s. We’ve seen glimpses of how the public reacted to their return, but seeing the domestic fallout through the eyes of a mother who wasn't exactly "Mother of the Year" before the plane went down adds a delicious layer of angst.
Of course, with this show, we can’t rule out a present-day appearance. If Vicky is sober and looking for her daughter, finding out Van is dead and that her "friends" might have had something to do with the general chaos of her life could turn Ringwald into a formidable new antagonist.
The Beginning of the End
As we head into the final season, the stakes are higher than a ritualistic sacrifice. Ringwald joining the hive signals that the creators aren't slowing down as they head toward the finish line. Whether she’s providing much-needed backstory or stirring the pot in the present, having the star of The Breakfast Club join a show about the world’s worst detention period is a stroke of meta-casting genius.
One thing is certain: in the wilderness of television, you either die a hero or live long enough to see Molly Ringwald play your mother.
Do you think Vicky will be a sympathetic figure, or is she just another "bad seed" in the Palmer family tree? Let us know your wildest theories over at The TV Cave.
Update: June Squibb also joins the cast.
