Another really strong episode of Matlock in the books again. This episode is following a lot of the previous week’s storylines and the king is right back into the chaos of what’s currently going on in everyone’s lives. I think this episode is really solidifying that Matty & Olympia are not that different after all and as much as they have to overcome, they still need each other and care for each other. We also got a good bit of Sarah (and Billy) in this episode and I’m glad to say that it felt equally balanced and very well paced. Matlock has never let me down thus far, but after the lack of side character material in the first two episodes, this really felt very smooth.
Matty is finding new ways to get under Olympia’s skin post-episode 2 and it’s been so entertaining to see. Throughout all of this, they’re dealing with the fact that Jacobson-Moore knows there was a leak and someone anonymous went to a reporter. So that heightens everything and they have to find a way to work together because neither of them can be caught. So that leaves them both in a place of finding common, neutral ground and of course, it’s never that simple.
They’re bickering and at odds at times and Sarah & Billy are catching wind of it. They’re not worried about what’s going on between them but about everything falling apart between the team. Matty & Olympia try to keep everything seemingly professional and cordial as the investigation proceeds.
I don’t want to spoil anything because I think this is a can’t miss episode, but we have a callback to Season 1 with a character that I didn’t think would be at the forefront again. This was really well played by the writers and it didn’t feel forced of out of place. And Matty’s connection to all of this, her web of lies, and her moral compass are shining throughout this. No matter how low she’s willing to go and the battles she’s willing to face, she still has empathy and cares for some of the people around her. No matter how much of this has affected her and taken her to place she hasn’t gone before. Overall, another very solid episode and one of my faves so far this season. I’d give this episode a strong 5/5 stars!
