Edwin and Matty have a heart to heart with Alfie and let him know what is going on with Joey & Edwin blows up and tells him about the fact that he knew about him since before birth. Meanwhile, Matty is keeping a secret that she is talking to Ellie through AI. Edwin and Matty meet with Joey, he admits to using while he was away but he is trying to get things together. When apologizing, Edwin argues with him about the issue of him abandoning Alfie, lying about it for years, and using again. Later on in the episode, Edwin and Alfie discover that Matty has been talking to an AI version of Ellie since last week’s case.
They are outraged and Edwin claims that she is addicted. I think that the discussions around grief, loss, and PTSD in this episode within Matty’s family really held strong. Matty is still struggling to let Ellie go, even though she knows that this AI version of her is not real, it brings her comfort. Meanwhile, Edwin is struggling with the PTSD of losing Ellie and is in turn lashing out on Joey. And of course, Alfie is in the middle of all of this. It makes me wonder where they are going to take his character as he matures. I predict that there will be some moral dilemmas heading his way in S3 and onward. He’s really good at the things he does, and due to that, he has been indoctrinated into a lot of things with Matty and Edwin that he really shouldn’t be a part of as a child.
Julian and Olympia talk to Matty about the discovery they have made with going through Senior’s finances from 2010. Matty & Edwin are reaching out to Debra Palmer from earlier in the season to see if they can get a look at her books. Soon after, Matty and Olympia discuss Debra and Edwin meeting with her as the IRS, when they get off of the elevator, Debra is meeting with Senior about the tax issue. Julian is able to intercept the meeting with his Dad and get Debra to meet with him instead. They orchestrate a plan to keep everyone who could foil the plan away from the meeting, but of course, that does not go to plan. Shae is supposed to be in court but she ends up being at the office and sees Matty with Edwin. Matty is able to dodge that bullet by telling her to not ask questions.
The case of the week focuses on a hit and run, the client is someone from Olympia’s past and when he comes to the office, he has evidence of who he thinks the suspect is and explains it all to the team. The judge at the hearing says that Olympia has to bring this together with concrete evidence or she is going to charge the firm with frivolous litigation. Hunter and Matty visit a tattoo parlor that may potentially be involved in further information, when speaking with the tattoo artist, he shows that he has footage of the the man who may have potentially done the hit and run. Olympia’s client blows up at the person of interest and things are not looking great for the case. Then, Matty discovers that there was a bike with the car the night of the accident. They confirm that it is the person of interest’s daughter, and she confesses to being behind the wheel the night of the accident because her dad was intoxicated.
Olympia talks to Sarah about whether she has made her decision on staying on Julian’s team or moving back to hers. Sarah seems unsure of her answer and she spends the majority of the episode pondering the choice and talking to Hunter about the perks of being with either Julian or Olympia. At the end of the episode, Sarah lets Olympia know that she is going to take the next 2 weeks before the merger to make her decision. Olympia supports her and says that she will be waiting to hear her decision.
At the end of the episode, Julian and Olympia find the evidence that they need to tie the money transfers to Senior and they have finally nailed him down with something concrete. And with that, the big arc of the season has finally reached its solution before the Season Finale next week. I really enjoyed this episode and I feel like they paced it very well in preparation for next week’s two hour Season Finale. I’m nervous that Shae might turn on Matty to look good in Senior’s eyes and I worry about what is to come with Joey and even Hunter; even though we still have a lot of ground to cover with this character, I have enjoyed the progression he’s had in this second half of the season.
Overall, a near perfect episode that is prepping the audience for the grand finale. A lot of storylines have reached a breaking point or are getting close to conclusion as we get ready for the end of Season 2. I would give this episode a 5/5 star rating.
