Matlock is back from another break in the second half of this season, and they’ve hit the ball rolling. This episode didn’t have as much going on as has been happening in the previous episodes this season, but a decent amount of progress has been made with some of our underlying plots this season.
Following the bombshell at the end of Episode 11 that Shae had tampered with the jury to get the vote to sway in Jacobson-Moore’s favor, we are seeing the fallout and the immediate response to that. Shae is our case of the week and the team is trying to prove her innocence as she seems to be being framed by someone.
After some incriminating evidence on video is presented towards the beginning of the episode, Olympia is shocked by determined to help in any way that she can. Soon after, The Wolf (Senior’s right hand man) informs Olympia that all executives are being removed from the case, which means that Matty is going to have to stand in Olympia’s place. This leads to some tension back at home as Edwin and Matty have planned a lovely and beautiful celebration for their 50th anniversary.
I think that both of these storylines somewhat reaching their head makes a lot of sense at this point in the season and in the grand scheme of things. And although I think that this episode was slower than the typical pace than we are used to, but I think that it served this episode very well. Shae’s trial progresses and it seems like every turn there is something else that is being thrown at her and it’s making it hard to see a way out of their current situation.
I think that this episode also humanized Shae a little bit more to the viewer, for most of her previous screentime, we didn’t see much of her past who she was as a jury consultant. But now we have some more empathy and sympathy for what her character is going though.
On the side, we have Julian and Olympia digging deeper into the Wellbrexa case and trying to find some clues to what is being covered up. We also see Hunter and Sarah working together this week and how that’s brought them closer as colleagues. Both of these stories were interested to see as well and also to see how they fold into the case and everything else going on.
Overall, I thought this was a slower but still solid episode of Matlock. I’m curious to see how we’re going to pick up the pace in the remaining episodes of Season 2 and what our cliffhanger will be for Season 3. Keeping my fingers crossed that there are no more breaks this season, I would give this episode a 4/5 star rating.
