Character’s stories are weaving together and evolving this week on Matlock.

For probably the first time this season, I felt like everyone’s stories were separate and moving forward, but also things were crossing over and setting up the future really well. It was also one of those episodes where it really flew by because it didn’t feel like much happened, but so many things are full steam ahead.

First, we have Matty and Julian having to work together to crack the Wellbrexa case together. At the beginning of the episode, Matty and Julian fake a fender bender so that this shady lawyer will help her out. In turn, they want to be able to gain access to his files so that they can get further in the Wellbrexa investigation. Throughout the episode, they’ve closer and closer to this document and during that time Matty starts smiling and laughing around Julian.

And at first, she thinks that she’s let him in too much and he’s getting too close to her, then towards the end she reevaluates and they seem closer than ever before. I’ve said it before, but this final half of the season really is allowing Jason Ritter to show off his range and abilities and seeing him interact with everyone more has been a highlight of these last few episodes. Also, on the Matty front, we see Matty struggling a little with the idea of moving back after the case is complete. We also know that Alfie doesn’t want to leave either, so that leaves Edwin as the odd man out.

The next major person we’re following is Sarah. Her longing for the team in last week’s episode has now turned into frustration. The new associate on Matty & Olympia’s team is trying to warm up to Sarah but she is still giving him the cold shoulder. He takes it in stride, but she just can’t take it in their office anymore. When she talks to Julian about it, he pulls some strings and Sarah is now getting her own personal office away from this. She seems excited, but things seem to still be weighing on her and her position within the company.

We find out that she has decided to begin the process of looking for her birth parents and Julian helped to give her the connection there. When Matty finds out that Sarah is getting her own space and leaving, it affects her too. Matty and Sarah end up meeting at their old spot on the room and having a heart-to-heart about looking for her birth parents and remaining in their current office. You can tell that Matty genuinely cares for Sarah and wants the best for her, but she also doesn’t want her to move to something else.

And finally, we have Olympia. We see the return of Remy and his persistence and pursuance of Olympia seems to be working out in his favor at the end of the episode. But at the beginning? It’s anything but. He offers to help Olympia with some tips about a judge that she’s going to be working with for the first time. She says she’s got it and remains confident and determined to prove him wrong. She winds up seeing Remy and the Judge outside of the courtroom, she walks up and makes a joke, and we find out the judge is his mother. That comment essentially makes Olympia’s fight in the courtroom a thousand times harder.

On top of that, she’s worried about what Senior is going to do after finding out that she helped rally the votes for the coup against him. He says he’s becoming more forgiving after his stroke, and he’s not going to fire her, but now she needs to get all of those stakeholders to flip the vote and be in support of him now. She’s in a bit of a bind, but you can see how much she values him, even if she doesn’t agree with everything he does. Shay is also back this week, for the case, but we also see her worried about the ongoing cuts going on at Jacobson-Moore and she terrified she’s next.

Senior’s kindness and forgiveness seems to be limited as Shay tries to have a heart-to-hear with him about their dedication to one another, and all he can say is that she better win her next case. Well this comes full circle and back onto Olympia, because we find out the case has come to a halt due to jury tampering. Olympia speaks with Sarah and finds out that Shay has been arrested for this and she was trying to use the jurors to win the case.

Overall, a decent episode but a really good episode for progression of each character individually. I would rate this episode a 4/5 stars.
