'Matlock' Season 1 Episode 16 "The Johnson Case" Recap

ree

Matlock is back after a two week hiatus for basketball. We pick up where we left off with Belvin being at the park waiting for Matty to show (although obviously she does not know it is Matty who she is meeting). Matty calls her with a phone she taped under the park bench and uses a voice distortion app so Belvin does not know it is her. Belvin lets it slip that the timeline is off with when the documents were stolen meaning that Julian is back in the running as a suspect.

Belvin won’t reveal anymore unless Matty reveals her identity so she leaves. Matty sends Belvin a threatening (her dog) letter and says she will call back at 3pm. Belvin does not answer and brings her dog to the office. This back and forth between Matty and Belvin is comedy gold.

Meanwhile Sarah and Billy think Olympia is leaving the firm for the public defenders office because Olympia is working on “The Johnson Case” and it does not exist. Olympia is out of the run for partner after winning because the other clients think she is not a team player.

Elsewhere, the team takes on a case of a wrongfully convicted man. The juror at the time (21 years ago) felt he was innocent but the juror bullied her into changing her mind to guilty. A reverse 12 Angry Men. The team found another suspect, the victim's grandson who was set to inherit her millions.

Matty tricks Belvin into thinking her dog was stolen so Belvin reveals that the timeline was wrong because there was a fire drill and the documents were stolen. Olympia, Senior and Julian were the only ones who did not sign in during the fire drill. Senior was out of the country and Olympia was in court meaning Olympia did not take the study.

All episode Matty was not understanding of how the Juror could be silent. She explained as an immigrant she was taught to respect authority and white men in particular because you could get in trouble if you spoke out. At that moment, Matty understood. I love how Matty’s world is getting bigger and she is learning of the plight of others that do not look like her. Of course, the man was wrongfully convicted and the team found the real murderer. A win for the good guys.

The bigger shocker comes at the end of the episode per usual when it is revealed that “The Johnson Case” is Olympia looking into Matty. She became suspicious when Julian swore he was not recording her. She also found Alfie’s ice cream card with a different county on it. Olympia asks Matty who she really is.
