MasterChef: Global Gauntlet Recap: Who Went Home After the Restaurant Takeover?

Spoilers ahead! If you haven’t watched the August 26 episode of MasterChef: Global Gauntlet, turn back now because we’re getting into who survived Restaurant Takeover — and who got sent home.

There are MasterChef challenges, and then there is the Restaurant Takeover — the annual reminder that being great inside the MasterChef kitchen does not necessarily mean you are ready to survive an actual dinner service.

With only six home cooks remaining on MasterChef: Global Gauntlet, Wednesday night's episode sent the contestants to Cluny Bistro, where Gordon Ramsay, Tiffany Derry and Joe Bastianich put them through one of the toughest tests of the season. There were orders to keep straight, dishes that had to leave the kitchen together and, naturally, Gordon waiting to pounce on every mistake.

By the end of service, the Top 6 became the Top 5 — and one contestant's MasterChef journey came to an end.

The Top 6 Take Over Cluny Bistro

For the Restaurant Takeover, the remaining contestants were divided into two teams. The Blue Team consisted of Jake Kelley, Heidi Muston and Julia Cili, with Jake taking on the role of captain. On the Red Team, Basia Newman stepped up as captain alongside Peter Egede and Dave Patera.

Both teams were tasked with serving a menu that included sautéed prawns and pan-seared branzino for appetizers, followed by pan-seared salmon and steak frites for the entrées. Gordon made the assignment clear: timing and communication were going to matter just as much as cooking ability.

And that turned out to be a problem.

The Blue Team Has Problems, but Keeps Moving

The Blue Team certainly didn't sail through dinner service without mistakes. Heidi struggled early as the pressure of the kitchen started setting in, while Julia ran into serious trouble during the entrée portion of service.

Julia's salmon became such an issue that Gordon eventually sent her into the cooler for a brief timeout to regroup. Yes, we reached the "go stand in the refrigerator and think about what you've done" portion of MasterChef. To Julia's credit, she came back more focused.

That became the biggest difference between the two teams. Blue made mistakes, but Jake, Heidi and Julia managed to recover from them and keep service moving. At this point in the competition, recovering quickly can be just as important as avoiding the mistake in the first place.

The Red Team's Dinner Service Starts Falling Apart

Things were much rougher on the other side of the kitchen.

Basia struggled to keep the Red Team organized as captain, while Peter and Dave had problems with undercooked seafood during the appetizer portion of service. Dave also found himself battling several issues throughout the night, including seasoning, keeping track of orders and eventually the salmon.

Communication became another major problem for the team, and Gordon repeatedly pushed them to get themselves organized. It didn't stick. As service continued, the Red Team fell further behind until Gordon eventually had to step in and help get the remaining food out to the dining room. When Gordon Ramsay has stopped yelling instructions and started helping cook your food, the writing might already be on the wall.

Who Won the Restaurant Takeover?

After dinner service and feedback from the diners, the judges named the Blue Team the winners.

That meant Jake, Heidi and Julia were officially safe and moving into the Top 5. The victory was particularly important for Jake. As the captain of the winning team, he earned an advantage heading into the next stage of the competition.

For Basia, Peter and Dave, however, there was nowhere to hide. The entire Red Team faced the judges after a service that simply never found its rhythm.

Who Went Home on MasterChef: Global Gauntlet?

After considering the Red Team's performance, the judges eliminated Dave Patera from MasterChef: Global Gauntlet.

Dave had experienced several problems during service, but his struggles with the salmon proved especially damaging on a night when the Red Team desperately needed to catch up.

It's a rough way to leave this late in the competition. Dave had made it all the way to the Top 6, only for one difficult restaurant service to bring his run to an end. But that's also where MasterChef gets brutal. A strong season doesn't buy anyone a free pass when only a handful of aprons remain.

The MasterChef: Global Gauntlet Top 5 Is Set

With Dave eliminated, only five home cooks remain:

• Jake Kelley

• Heidi Muston

• Julia Cili

• Basia Newman

• Peter Egede

And we're officially getting very close to the end. The Top 5 will next face "Keeping Up with Gordon and Tiffany," where the remaining contestants must recreate signature dishes alongside Gordon Ramsay and Tiffany Derry in real time. Only three cooks will advance, meaning the finale is right around the corner.

After surviving Restaurant Takeover, nobody has much room left for another bad night.
