Idiots Movie Review: This Raunchy Comedy Is Way Better Than Expected

Newest raunchy comedy that I actually like!

I honestly wasn't expecting much going into Idiots, but this movie surprised me. It's the kind of raunchy comedy that knows exactly what it wants to be, and thankfully, it doesn't take itself too seriously. There are plenty of ridiculous moments, some completely unhinged characters, and a surprisingly good story underneath all of the craziness.

The movie opens with O'Shea Jackson Jr.'s character, Davis, getting scolded by a pastor after taking some kids to an NRA movie. He thought the kids would think he was cool, but yeah...that was probably a terrible idea from the beginning. Then we meet Dave Franco's character, Marc, who is getting fired from his job. He's been drinking while working and basically slacking off, but his firing is actually part of a larger round of layoffs. Marc has no idea what he's going to do next, and things get even worse when we see how he's handling life at home.

Let's just say he isn't exactly making the healthiest choices. Marc is using drugs and basically has no direction. His friend suggests that he start transporting kids to and from rehab. Marc initially turns the idea down, but once he finds out how much they are paying, suddenly he's interested. That's when he notices Davis sitting outside.

Davis takes this job seriously, and that immediately creates a great dynamic between these two characters. O'Shea Jackson Jr. plays the straight man to Dave Franco's completely ridiculous character, and the two of them work extremely well together.

Then we meet Mason Thames' character, Sheridan, a troubled and extremely wealthy teenager who is being sent to rehab. And this is where the movie really starts taking off.

Sheridan makes an immediate impression, including nearly causing Marc to break his ankle within the first few minutes of them meeting. His attitude and the way he talks about his drug use had me laughing. Mason Thames is definitely playing a very different type of character here, and honestly, this might be the craziest character I've seen him play.

The chemistry between Mason, O'Shea and Dave is one of the best things about this movie. These three characters couldn't be more different, which is exactly why putting them together works so well.

You have a God-fearing man who has hit rock bottom, a drug addict who has also hit rock bottom, and a spoiled, troubled rich kid who has absolutely no problem causing problems for everybody around him. What could possibly go wrong?

Pretty much everything. The movie also features Kiernan Shipka, Peter Dinklage and Nicholas Braun, and they all add something to the craziness. I especially wasn't expecting some of the things that happen involving Mason Thames' character. Without getting into spoilers, Sheridan does some seriously messed-up things, and Mason completely commits to the role.

What I really enjoyed about Idiots, though, is that underneath all the raunchy jokes and ridiculous situations, there is actually a story about three very different people who are dealing with their own problems. Their personalities and beliefs constantly clash, but they slowly start becoming a team while trying to look out for Sheridan.

That's where the movie works better than I expected it to. I went into this thinking I was just going to get another raunchy comedy filled with stupid jokes, but there's actually some heart underneath all of it. The characters aren't perfect, and honestly, some of them make some REALLY questionable decisions, but that's part of what makes the movie entertaining.

And yes, there are plenty of moments where I was sitting there thinking, "There is no way they just did that!"

If you're looking for a comedy that doesn't mind going completely off the rails, Idiots might be worth checking out. The chemistry between Dave Franco, O'Shea Jackson Jr. and Mason Thames carries the movie, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed watching these three completely dysfunctional characters try to figure things out.

Idiots hits theaters August 28th.

And yeah...I actually liked this one!
