Marvel Zombies is an animated miniseries from Marvel Studios that is a gloriously gruesome spin on the superhero genre that says goodbye to clean-cut heroics and hello to full-blown apocalyptic chaos. But is it actually good or just another gimmicky corpse in the MCU graveyard? Let's bite into it.
Marvel Zombies is the four-episode animated horror fest that expands on the fan-favorite “What If… Zombies?!” episode from the What If…? series. Released exclusively on Disney Plus, the show takes place in an alternate universe where a zombie virus infects the Marvel Universe. Yes, that means zombified Iron Man, undead Captain Marvel, and more nightmare fuel than you probably asked for.
This isn’t your usual Marvel content. Rated TV MA, it’s loaded with gore, horror references, and the kind of brutal deaths Marvel usually teases but never delivers. And with characters like Kamala Khan, Yelena Belova, and Shang-Chi trying to survive, the stakes feel higher than ever.
The Good: Gore, Humor, and Apocalyptic Fan Service
Let’s start with what Marvel Zombies gets right. It leans hard into horror with over-the-top zombie designs, gnarly fight sequences, and truly shocking deaths. The animation style is gritty enough to sell the dread without going full grotesque. Plus, it’s fun seeing the MCU’s cleanest heroes become literal monsters. The show even drops in a few clever twists and character moments that make it more than just blood and brains.
Kamala Khan shines as the emotional anchor, and the series is smart enough to make her wide-eyed horror part of the viewing experience. Bonus points for a few cameos that will have longtime fans grinning… or gagging.
The Bad: Rushed Plot and Uneven Tone
Here’s the undead elephant in the room. Four episodes are simply not enough to juggle dozens of characters, multiple plotlines, and emotional weight. Some deaths happen so fast they feel more like shock value than story. The show also flip-flops between horror and classic Marvel quips, which works sometimes but occasionally feels like a tonal car crash.
The animation, while serviceable, won’t win any awards, and a few voice actors sound like they’re phoning it in from beyond the grave.
Marvel Zombies Is a Bloody Good Time With Bite
Marvel Zombies may not be perfect, but it’s one of the boldest swings Marvel Animation has taken in years. It’s fast, freaky, and filled with fan service that doesn’t completely rot the brain. If you love the MCU and have a taste for horror, you’ll have a blast watching your favorite heroes go full zombie apocalypse.
