James Gunn Spills Tea on Amanda Waller Series Starring Viola Davis: Still Happening, Just Fashionably Late

Woman in a navy blazer looks serious. Background shows blurred portraits of two men. She wears a pearl necklace and white top.

So you thought the Amanda Waller series had quietly vanished into the DC graveyard next to Batgirl and a dozen half-baked reboots. Well, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and everyone’s favorite nerdy overlord, has confirmed that the Viola Davis-led Waller series is still alive and kicking — just not kicking very fast.

So what’s really going on behind the scenes, and why has this spinoff from Peacemaker taken so long to move forward? Let’s break it down.

Waller Is Still in the Game, Just Taking the Scenic Route

James Gunn recently gave fans a long-awaited update and confirmed that the Amanda Waller series is very much still in development. In his words, “Some things have moved faster than others. Waller’s not been the fastest.” Translation? It’s not dead, but it’s definitely dragging its feet.

Despite the slow progress, Gunn reassured everyone that the project is still active and has not been scrapped or reworked into something else. That’s good news for fans of Viola Davis, who absolutely owns the role of the stone-cold DC strategist who’s always two steps ahead and about five morality lines behind.

Blame the Delays on Quality Control and a Bit of Chaos

The delay isn’t entirely mysterious. Between the 2023 writers and actors strikes, a shifting production calendar, and DC’s infamous habit of blowing things up mid-plan, it’s a miracle anything’s still on track. Gunn emphasized that he’s taking time to get the script right before pushing it into production. Think of it less like a delay and more like slow-cooked chaos.

Showrunners Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) are still attached, and Davis remains on board as both lead and executive producer. So yes, this is still the real deal — not some weird backdoor pilot for Checkmate.

What Comes Next for Amanda Waller and the DCU?

The series is expected to land after Peacemaker Season 2, which hits in August 2025. It’s part of James Gunn’s larger DC Universe overhaul, which includes everything from Superman to Lanterns to Booster Gold. So Waller is still a major piece on Gunn’s DC chessboard — she’s just not rushing to make her next move.

Waller’s Still Watching You

In classic Amanda Waller fashion, this show is operating under the radar and on its own terms. While some DC projects sprint to the finish only to trip over themselves, Waller seems to be taking the smart route — slow, deliberate, and hopefully worth the wait.

Keep your eye on this one. If Gunn and Davis pull it off, Waller could be one of the DCU’s most compelling shows. Until then, just know she’s still lurking in the shadows — and probably planning something terrifying.
