Jake Johnson’s New Badge and Peacock’s Bridezilla Makeover: The Latest TV Casting Roundup

Man in a green shirt stands against a light blue background, looking directly at the camera with a neutral expression.

If you’ve been staring at your streaming queue feeling a profound sense of emptiness, take heart: the casting gods have heard your cries. From cynical private eyes to small-town wedding wars, the television landscape is getting a major facelift. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of 30-minute comedies or a sucker for a gritty Netflix procedural, the latest casting news suggests that 2025 and 2026 are going to be very busy years for your remote control.

Jake Johnson Goes Full Philip Marlowe (With Better Jokes)

First up, the man who gave us the "turtle face" is finally returning to his natural habitat: the half-hour comedy. Jake Johnson, forever enshrined in the TV Hall of Fame as New Girl’s Nick Miller, is headed to NBC for an untitled pilot that sounds like a match made in sitcom heaven.

Johnson is set to play Mickey, a "smart, cynical, and heartbroken" private investigator. If that description sounds like Nick Miller with a magnifying glass and a slightly better work ethic, you aren’t far off. The real selling point here? The show comes from the brains of Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, the duo responsible for the legendary Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Expect sharp dialogue, daddy issues, and hopefully, at least one scene where Mickey forgets how to be a functioning human being.

Emma Roberts is Trading Horror for Veils

Over at Peacock, the streamer is digging into the 2009 archives to bring us a "fresh, loose reimagining" of the rom-com Bride Wars. Emma Roberts, who has spent the last decade alternating between being a literal witch and a slasher survivor on American Horror Story, is taking a sharp turn into the world of Tiered Cakes and "Bridezilla" meltdowns.

However, this isn't a carbon copy of the Kate Hudson/Anne Hathaway flick. In this version, Roberts plays a high-powered city wedding planner who invades a small town, only to clash with the local expert. It’s giving "Hallmark Movie, but with a budget and actual sass," and we are absolutely here for the inevitable floral arrangement-based sabotage.

Netflix’s ‘Untamed’ Beefs Up the Roster

Finally, if you prefer your TV with a side of "don't go into the woods," Netflix’s Untamed is loading up for a massive second season. The streamer recently announced a wave of new additions, including Moon Bloodgood and Kekoa Kekumano as series regulars.

The Season 2 cast list reads like a "Who’s Who" of prestige TV veterans, adding Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent) and Joe Tippett (Mare of Easttown). With the production reportedly moving to Hawaii, expect the scenery to be as beautiful as the plot is stressful.

Why This Matters for Your Watchlist

These casting shifts signal a clear trend: networks and streamers are leaning back into star-driven vehicles with proven comedic and dramatic chops. NBC is betting on the "detective with a heart of gold" trope, while Peacock is banking on nostalgia and Emma Roberts’ ability to play "mean girl with a heart" to perfection.

Between the return of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine creative energy and the expansion of Netflix’s prestige thrillers, the upcoming season is shaping up to be a marathon, not a sprint. Keep your snacks ready and your subscriptions active, The TV Cave will be here to recap every messy wedding and botched investigation along the way.

Think Jake Johnson can pull off the P.I. look, or do you just want him back in the loft? Drop a comment and let us know which of these projects you’re actually going to watch.
