Invincible Season 4 Episode 7 Recap: Thragg Destroys Viltrum and Changes Everything

It opens with a flashback that explains how the Viltrumites became who they are and why they follow their “everything is ours and death to all” ethos. Eight against forty-plus doesn’t seem fair, but it almost works. Viltrum is destroyed and split from end to end as lava flows across the surface and the planet literally tears itself apart. Nolan, Mark, and Thaedus power through the planet’s core as they try to bring it down from within. Mark, Nolan, and Oliver are critically injured, and Thaedus is decapitated by Thragg. Regent Thragg lives up to the hype as the strongest Viltrumite still alive. Even Nolan (Omni-Man) can’t take him down, and neither can Mark (Invincible). Invincible might need to rethink his name.

The Coalition of Planets council appoints Allen to take over Thaedus’ position until a permanent replacement can be found. There are fewer than ten Viltrumites remaining, and they are all heading in one direction: Earth. The war isn’t over yet. The team prepares to follow them, hoping they can figure out a way to deal with Thragg before he arrives. The episode is packed with action, but also includes quieter, more introspective and even heartwarming moments. It is extremely violent at times, but still grounded enough to follow emotionally. The season finale is next week, and production is already underway for Season 5, with a projected release window between February and April 2027.

The story opens with a flashback showing Relonian workers going about their jobs under Viltrumite occupation while secretly sabotaging production systems. They plant a bomb on a container, which explodes too late for the Viltrumites to stop. This marks the third act of sabotage in a week, as the species refuses to submit to occupation. Regent Thragg recommends a planet-wide culling, while Thaedus argues they are resisting because the Viltrumites are cruel occupiers. Emperor Argall asks for Thragg’s opinion, and Thragg claims the species must be “educated” because their defiance is a flaw in the natural order. Argall ultimately agrees with Thragg and orders the population reduced to 25 percent, escalating to total eradication if resistance continues. Thaedus strongly objects, but Argall dismisses his concerns.

That night, Emperor Argall is assassinated. In the aftermath, Thragg declares that a traitor is among them and that a sickness is poisoning Viltrum from within. He orders the “cancer” in their society to be purged and kills a leader on the spot when asked if he would ever betray them. Thragg assumes leadership while Argall’s heirs are sought, and his first command is to eliminate internal weakness. With no defined target, the Viltrumites descend into paranoia and begin slaughtering one another, including children following their parents’ example. Only the strongest survive the purge, and Conquest is among them. After the bloodshed, Thragg declares the empire cleansed and orders expansion across the universe under the rallying cry of “All is ours.”

In the present, Thragg returns to Viltrum and tells Argall’s skull that he failed the empire, but he will not fail them again. Thaedus informs the Coalition that all intelligence suggests Thragg and the remaining Viltrumites have returned to Viltrum, while scattered forces across the galaxy are still en route. This creates a narrow window where Thragg is vulnerable, and Thaedus insists it is time to end the war permanently. Allen points out that even if Thragg is killed, there are still surviving Viltrumites who could retaliate. Thaedus believes that without Thragg, they will fall into chaos and destroy each other, ending the threat once and for all.

Mark records a message to Eve, explaining that the eight of them are heading to Viltrum to kill Regent Thragg. He admits even Omni-Man is afraid of facing him and says this may be his last chance to say goodbye in case he does not return. Meanwhile, Allen, Telia, Battle Beast, Oliver, and Zoe share a tense meal together. Allen tries to get Zoe to eat, while she admits she is too nervous. Oliver questions the fear surrounding Thragg, and Telia confirms he lives up to the reputation. Battle Beast insists they must eat before battle, adding that afterward they will feast on their enemies if they survive. The conversation turns reflective as they discuss favorite meals, with Zoe recalling Burger Mart with her father and Oliver remembering homemade spaghetti. Battle Beast concludes that his ideal meal would be his own blood during a glorious death in battle, shocking everyone.

Thaedus speaks with Nolan, who admits he is worried about facing Thragg again. Thaedus reminds him that even scattered Viltrumites remain dangerous. Nolan counters that Mark and Oliver are also part Viltrumite, which complicates the mission. As they arrive at Viltrum, the team prepares for infiltration. Zoe notes they only have a limited number of sinlak poison darts, while Telia explains their rarity. Nolan reminds Mark and Oliver that Thragg is stronger than all of them and urges them not to split up. Mark reinforces the plan: stay together and avoid solo confrontations. Before deployment, Nolan tells his sons he loves them.

As they approach Viltrum, they see the bodies of dead Viltrumites arranged in a massive orbital ring, the result of a biological scourge virus that wiped out most of the population. A surviving female Viltrumite alerts Thragg, and the team is ambushed immediately. Thaedus is stabbed in the back, and the battle erupts across the surface. Zoe uses sinlak darts to weaken a Viltrumite, while Allen engages enemies alongside her. Mark and Oliver fight Lucan, Thaedus battles General Kregg despite his wound, and Nolan takes on Anissa. Battle Beast engages a female Viltrumite in brutal combat. Space Racer arrives and releases Rognarr creatures, turning the tide temporarily as chaos spreads across the battlefield.

Thragg watches the fight unfold before engaging Nolan directly, overpowering him easily. Nolan refuses to rejoin Viltrum, rejecting Thragg’s offer to rebuild their empire together. Thragg dismisses him and knocks him into space. Mark and Oliver are overwhelmed, and Oliver rushes Thragg only to have his arm ripped off. Mark attempts to fight Thragg head-on, but his strike breaks his own hand, and Thragg shows no concern. Nolan returns to the fight, but Thragg impales him, mortally wounding him. Mark is beaten unconscious, and Thragg threatens to kill him as the remaining Viltrumites regroup.

As the Coalition begins to collapse, Nolan, Mark, Thaedus, Allen, Space Racer, Zoe, and Battle Beast regroup and use Space Racer’s weapon to ignite Viltrum’s core. The team descends into the planet as it begins to break apart, pushing through molten destruction until Viltrum is completely annihilated. The explosion destroys the planet, scattering its remains and killing the majority of its population. Thragg survives, however, and decapitates Thaedus in rage, declaring revenge for Emperor Argall. He then turns his attention back to Nolan and Mark, nearly killing them both before they are rescued and evacuated by Telia’s ship.

Mark later wakes up after being unconscious for weeks, with Allen explaining the aftermath. Nolan is alive but severely injured, and Oliver is recovering in a healing tank. Thaedus is confirmed dead, and Allen has taken his position temporarily. Despite searching, the remaining Viltrumites and Thragg have vanished without a trace. Mark realizes where they are heading: Earth.

The episode delivers nonstop action with massive battles, high stakes, and major emotional moments. While extremely violent, it balances quieter character-driven scenes that give weight to the chaos. The flashback provides important context for the Viltrumite ideology and Thragg’s rise to power, while the present-day conflict escalates into one of the most destructive battles in the series. Thaedus is killed, Allen steps into leadership, and Viltrum is destroyed. With Thragg and the remaining Viltrumites now heading toward Earth, the war is far from over. This episode earns a strong five out of five stars.
