The Truth Is Still Out There! Hulu Orders Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ Reboot to Series

The truth is still out there, and Ryan Coogler is about to help us find it. Or at least leave us questioning everything we thought we knew, which sounds about right for The X-Files.
Hulu has officially ordered Coogler's reimagining of the iconic science-fiction series, bringing the franchise one step closer to its return to television. After years of development and plenty of questions about whether the project would actually happen, the streamer has given it the green light. And with the filmmaker behind Sinners, Black Panther, and Creed leading the charge, there's good reason to be curious about what he's cooking up.
A New Generation Is Taking Over the X-Files
Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will lead the new series as two highly accomplished FBI agents who couldn't be more different. Their assignment brings them together in a long-abandoned division responsible for investigating cases involving unexplained phenomena.
You know, the kind of cases that make most reasonable people turn around, lock their doors, and mind their business. But these are FBI agents, so naturally, they're heading straight toward the strange noises.
The premise keeps the foundation that made the original series so compelling while introducing a new partnership at the center of the story. Instead of simply recasting Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, the reboot will follow two new characters navigating a world where the answers aren't always logical and the government might know a whole lot more than it's willing to admit. Considering the world we're living in, a show about conspiracy theories, government secrets, and unexplained activity might hit a little differently today.
Ryan Coogler Is Bringing His Own Vision to the Franchise
Coogler wrote and directed the pilot episode and will serve as an executive producer, with Jennifer Yale taking on showrunner duties. Original X-Files creator Chris Carter is also involved as an executive producer alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. That's an encouraging combination, especially for longtime fans who might be wondering whether another reboot is necessary.
Let's face it, Hollywood loves digging through its old television catalog. Every time we turn around, somebody is bringing back another beloved series, and the results can be a little hit-or-miss. Nostalgia might get viewers through the door, but it takes more than a familiar title to keep them watching. Coogler, however, has demonstrated an ability to take established genres and give them his own identity. Sinners proved he could blend horror, history, music, and social commentary into something that felt distinct, while Black Panther showed his ability to balance spectacle with deeply personal storytelling.
Now imagine that creative approach applied to alien encounters, government cover-ups, and all the unsettling mysteries that made The X-Files a television phenomenon. We're listening.
Can the Reboot Live Up to Mulder and Scully?
Of course, stepping into the world of The X-Files comes with some pretty big expectations.
The original series, created by Carter, premiered in 1993 and followed FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigated paranormal activity, unexplained disappearances, and conspiracies that seemed to grow more complicated with every discovery. Their partnership became the heart of the series, with Mulder's willingness to believe constantly clashing with Scully's scientific skepticism. Throw in some creepy creatures, suspicious government officials, and enough unanswered questions to make your head spin, and you had one of television's most memorable duos.
That's the challenge facing this new version. The mysteries matter, but so does the chemistry between the people trying to solve them. Deadwyler has delivered powerful performances across film and television, while Patel has demonstrated his range in projects including Station Eleven and Yesterday. Together, they'll have the opportunity to establish a partnership that belongs to them rather than simply trying to recreate what Duchovny and Anderson accomplished.
Because nobody needs a Mulder and Scully imitation. Give us new characters, compelling mysteries, and enough suspicious government activity to make us question every official explanation, and we'll gladly come along for the ride.
When Will ‘The X-Files’ Reboot Premiere on Hulu?
Hulu has not announced a premiere date or episode count for the new X-Files series. The project previously received a pilot order in February 2026, and today's full series pickup confirms that Coogler's version is moving forward.
Whether the original stars will make appearances remains an open question, but the new series already has an intriguing creative team and two talented leads ready to investigate whatever strange cases come their way. Now all we need is a dark room, a flashlight, a suspicious noise coming from somewhere nobody should be investigating, and somebody insisting there's a perfectly logical explanation for everything.
Sure there is.
The truth is out there, and we're ready to start looking again.
