Well, look who's getting the band back together!

CBS has officially announced that Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly will reunite onscreen as Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo for the first time in a decade. The long-awaited reunion takes place during the October 20 episode of NCIS: Origins, and longtime fans might want to clear their Tuesday night schedules.

After 13 seasons of watching Gibbs keep DiNozzo in line, these two are finally sharing the screen again. But things have changed quite a bit since their days working together, especially now that Tony is the one calling the shots at NCIS.

Tony DiNozzo is the director now, and somewhere we're imagining Gibbs raising an eyebrow at that development.

Gibbs Is Back, and He's Bringing Trouble With Him

The reunion isn't happening simply for nostalgia's sake. Gibbs has found himself tangled in a dangerous mystery that stretches all the way back to his early days at Camp Pendleton, and somebody clearly doesn't want him digging into the past.

During the Season 3 premiere of NCIS: Origins, Gibbs was shot by unknown attackers, setting off a present-day storyline that will continue throughout the season. Now, he's making his way back to NCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he turns to his former colleague for help.

And that colleague just happens to be the agency's new director. Michael Weatherly returned to the flagship NCIS series earlier this month, with DiNozzo stepping into a leadership position that longtime viewers probably never imagined he'd occupy. Let's remember, this is the same man who spent years testing Gibbs' patience with movie references, jokes, and the occasional questionable decision. Now he's running the agency? That's character development, folks.

Still, underneath all that humor, Tony was always a capable investigator who earned Gibbs' trust. Their relationship became one of the defining dynamics of the original series, mixing a mentor-student bond with the kind of back-and-forth that made their scenes so entertaining. Seeing how that relationship has evolved after ten years could be one of the most interesting parts of their reunion.

‘NCIS: Origins’ Is Connecting the Past and Present

Season 3 of NCIS: Origins is doing something a little different by bringing Harmon back onscreen as the present-day Gibbs while continuing to explore his younger years through Austin Stowell's portrayal of the character.

The series normally takes viewers back to the early 1990s, when Gibbs was beginning his career at Camp Pendleton. Now, events from that period are becoming increasingly important to a mystery unfolding decades later. Harmon, who has narrated the series since its debut, is appearing throughout Season 3 as the older Gibbs, giving the prequel an opportunity to connect its two timelines in a much bigger way.

The October 20 episode, titled "Return of the Mack," will also feature Adam Campbell returning as a younger Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard. In the 1992 storyline, Ducky helps investigate the mysterious murder of a Marine, while the present-day story brings Gibbs face-to-face with DiNozzo

Talk about giving longtime fans plenty to look forward to. Bringing these characters back without simply repeating the past is a smart move. Gibbs and Tony aren't the same men they were ten years ago, and watching them navigate those changes could be just as entertaining as seeing them work a case together. Of course, we're still hoping Tony says something ridiculous and Gibbs gives him that look. Some traditions are too good to retire.

CBS Is Having Quite the ‘NCIS’ Homecoming

The reunion comes as CBS continues expanding its NCIS universe while bringing familiar faces back into the fold.

Weatherly's return to the flagship series and Harmon's larger role in NCIS: Origins have already given longtime viewers reasons to revisit the franchise. The Season 3 premiere of Origins averaged 4.39 million viewers, according to CBS, a 20% increase over its year-ago premiere.

And now the network is putting two of the franchise's most recognizable characters back in the same room.

For fans who spent years watching Gibbs and DiNozzo investigate crimes, trade sarcastic remarks, and somehow manage to tolerate each other, this is more than another guest appearance. It's an opportunity to see what their relationship looks

like after a decade apart.

Although, let's be serious, Tony might have the director's office now, but does anybody genuinely believe Gibbs is going to start taking orders from him without asking questions? Exactly.

When Will Gibbs and DiNozzo Reunite on ‘NCIS: Origins’?

Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly reunite in the Tuesday, October 20, episode of NCIS: Origins, airing at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

With Gibbs investigating whoever tried to kill him and DiNozzo now occupying the director's chair, their reunion has the potential to deliver both the nostalgia fans have been waiting for and a major development in the season's ongoing mystery.

Ten years later, Gibbs and DiNozzo are back together. Now somebody please tell Tony to watch the back of his head.
