The ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood event is back and let’s just say it’s giving Hollywood exactly what it needs: unapologetic celebration, star-studded glamour, and a dash of Gen Z energy. The annual gala, a cornerstone in honoring Black women in the entertainment industry, brought together actors, producers, writers, and cultural icons to toast achievements, highlight emerging talent, and remind the world why representation matters. With executive producers Massah David and Miatta Johnson at the helm, this year’s event proved once again that BWIH isn’t just an awards luncheon, it’s an industry statement wrapped in sequins and champagne.
The 2026 gala was a carefully curated mix of legacy talent and rising stars. Honorees included Chase Infiniti, receiving her award from One Battle After Another co-star Teyana Taylor, and LaTanya Richardson Jackson, celebrated by Jurnee Smollett. Kerry Washington made a rare return to the BWIH stage for her second honor in 14 years, while Zinzi Coogler and the women behind the record-breaking film Sinners, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Ruth E. Carter, Autumn Arkapaw, Shunika Terry-Jennings, and Hannah Beachler earned the prestigious Luminary Spotlight, introduced by Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler.
Hosting duties were handled by the always-charming Marsai Martin, whose energy set the tone for a day packed with memorable moments. From Tyrese Gibson’s surprise serenade to Mýa’s powerhouse closing performance of “Unbreakable,” the event balanced heartfelt tributes with star-studded spectacle. And yes, the guest list read like a Black Hollywood who’s-who: Zendaya, Chloe x Halle, Yvonne Orji, Niecy Nash, Laverne Cox, Regé-Jean Page, and political figures like Maxine Waters and Mayor Karen Bass, proving that BWIH is as much about cultural influence as it is about glitz.
Since taking over production in 2021, MVD Inc. has transformed the luncheon into a buzzy, culturally resonant gala that centers both Black women legends and emerging talent. With elevated aesthetics, curated locations, and a spotlight on younger actresses, the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood event is now a must-attend, talked-about moment on Hollywood’s calendar.
