9-1-1 Nashville Season 1 Episode 13 Recap: Taylor Takes A Stand

A surprised woman in a fire department shirt holds a paper in an industrial setting. Yellow railing in background.

I said I was done with the 9-1-1 franchise after Bobby died in the flagship show. I gave episode 1 of a chance of Nashville but it did not move me. I just didn't and still don't understand the point of cancelling Lone Star for another country city. I was lookng forward to maybe Vegas or Hawaii but here we are in Nashville. I've steered clear but I have been seeing all the clips and edits of Taylor and Blue, I had to check them out. I binged and here we are on episode 13, aptly titled "Small Potatoes," which served up a hearty helping of medical malpractice suits, musical ultimatums and enough romantic tension to snap a guitar string.

A Cliffside Rescue and a Career Crisis

The episode kicked off with the kind of heart-stopping emergency we’ve come to expect: a father and daughter dangling off a cliffside in a mangled car. It was the perfect stage for Taylor Thompson (Hailey Kilgore) to shine, proving once again that she’s as skilled with a rescue harness as she is with a microphone.

But the real drama started when the dust settled. Taylor finally landed her "big break" an invite to record with Nashville music icon, Victoria. The catch? The industry idol wanted Taylor to lend her voice to a commercial jingle with a message so ethically bankrupt it made our skin crawl. In a move that was both inspiring and professionally suicidal, Taylor told the legend where to shove her contract. Victoria’s response? A vow to blackball Taylor from Music City. It’s a bold move for a rookie, but Taylor’s integrity remained intact, even if her demo tapes ended up in the trash.

Starchy Situations and Legal Loopholes

Meanwhile, Roxie Alba (Juani Feliz) spent the hour dodging a metaphorical bullet and a literal lawsuit. The "potato" in the episode title refers to a bizarre medical intervention involving a certain root vegetable used as a makeshift prophylactic. Yes, you read that right. Welcome to Nashville, folks.

The mother of the patient, Celeste, dragged Roxie into a legal hearing that looked grim until nature intervened. When Celeste suffered an ectopic pregnancy during the proceedings, Roxie’s prior medical concerns were vindicated on the spot. The lawsuit was dropped faster than a hot potato and while we’re glad Roxie is off the hook, we’re still checking our pantry twice before cooking dinner.

Love Is in the Air (And the Firehouse)

The "Secret Romance" trope finally hit its expiration date. Blue Bennings (Hunter McVey) and Taylor officially took their relationship public, much to the lack of surprise from Captain Don Hart (Chris O'Donnell), who apparently has eyes in the back of his head. Don spent the episode being the "Dad" of the station, offering Roxie the same emotional anchor she provided him during his season-long battle with panic attacks.

The Final Chord

Taylor may be persona non grata in the recording studios, but Cammie Raleigh (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) proved there’s more than one way to find an audience. The episode closed with Taylor performing a soulful rendition of "Brave" by Sara Bareilles for hospital patients. It was exactly the kind of emotional manipulation we tune in for every week.

With a few more episodes left in the season and a Season 2 renewal already in the bag, the stakes for the 113 are only getting higher.
