HBO Max Orders Big Bang Spinoff and It’s Pure Nerd Chaos

Man in plaid shirt stands in a comic shop, talking. Another person browses comics in the background. Superman figures are visible nearby.

Fans of The Big Bang Theory, rejoice — or brace yourselves — because the universe is expanding again, and this time it’s weird. HBO Max (now just “Max” because apparently fewer letters = cooler) has officially greenlit a brand-new spinoff of the legendary sitcom, and the star? Stuart Bloom. Yes, Stuart, the socially awkward, kind-of-depressed comic book store guy. Turns out, he’s about to save the multiverse... or ruin it entirely.

In the upcoming spinoff series ordered by HBO Max, titled "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," he is front and center. That’s right. Stuart is no longer the guy selling comics in the background. He’s about to become the unlikely (and probably unwilling) hero of a sci-fi sitcom about saving reality itself.

What Is "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" aka Big Bang Spinoff About?

The premise? Utter chaos. Stuart accidentally activates or breaks some sort of high-concept multiverse device originally built by Sheldon and Leonard. Oops. What follows is a wild ride through alternate realities, featuring different versions of familiar characters, bizarre timelines, and reality-bending hijinks. It’s part sitcom, part sci-fi, part comic book fever dream.

And no, this is not Young Sheldon with glasses. This is full-on nerdy multiverse madness with sitcom laughs and special effects. So if you thought The Big Bang Theory was about equations and sarcasm, this one adds interdimensional shenanigans to the mix.

Cast and Crew: Returning Favorites and Sci Fi Flares

Kevin Sussman returns as the man of the hour, and he’s joined by some of the franchise’s more quirky recurring characters:

  • Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Stuart’s surprisingly loyal and geek-chic girlfriend

  • Brian Posehn as Bert, the lovable rock nerd

  • John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke, everyone’s favorite lisping antagonist

Behind the scenes, Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, the creators of The Big Bang Theory, are back as executive producers. Joining them is Zak Penn, the writer known for work on The Avengers and Ready Player One, which should tell you a lot about the tone they’re going for — high-concept, nerd-approved, and slightly absurd.

When and Where to Watch

So far, HBO Max hasn’t dropped a premiere date, but the series is officially in development. Given the speed of Max’s recent content rollout, fans can probably expect to see the show hit screens sometime in late 2025 or early 2026.

It will be exclusive to Max, so if you’ve canceled your subscription after binging Succession for the third time, now might be a good time to reconsider.

The Big Bang Universe Keeps Getting Bigger

Let’s recap. First, we had The Big Bang Theory, then Young Sheldon took us to the Texas days of mini-Cooper (Sheldon, not the car), followed by Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage continuing the Cooper family story. And now, we’re being flung across the multiverse with a man who once cried behind a cash register.

It’s a wild swing, and honestly, that’s exactly why it could be the best thing to happen to the franchise in years.

From Basement Dweller to Universe Savior

The Big Bang Theory spinoff ordered at HBO Max is more than just another nostalgia grab. It’s a chance to do something weird, clever, and totally unexpected. Stuart Bloom’s underdog charm, paired with high-stakes sci fi, could deliver something refreshingly ridiculous in the best possible way.

So if you thought The Big Bang Theory was over, think again. The multiverse has other plans.
