Genie Francis to Receive Lifetime Achievement Honor at 2026 Daytime Emmy Awards

Nearly 50 years after Genie Francis first stepped into Port Charles as Laura, the General Hospital icon is receiving one of daytime television’s highest honors.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Thursday that Francis will receive the Lifetime Achievement Honor at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, taking place October 30 in Hollywood, California.

The honor arrives just months before another extraordinary milestone for Francis. In February 2027, she will celebrate the 50th anniversary of her daytime television debut on General Hospital.

Francis was only 14 years old when she first appeared as Laura Vining in 1977. What followed was a television career that would make Laura one of the most recognizable and enduring characters in soap opera history.

Her pairing with Anthony Geary's Luke Spencer became a defining part of General Hospital, culminating in Luke and Laura's famous 1981 wedding. An estimated 30 million viewers tuned in for the event, cementing its place in television history.

Decades later, Francis remains an important part of General Hospital. Laura has gone from teenager to mother, grandmother and now mayor of Port Charles, giving generations of viewers the rare opportunity to watch a character grow and evolve across nearly five decades.

Genie Francis Reflects on the Honor

“I want to offer my deepest gratitude to the leadership of NATAS for honoring me with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” Francis said in a statement.

Reflecting on the approaching anniversary, Francis recalled joining General Hospital as a teenager and never imagining where the role would take her. “I am deeply grateful to have been welcomed onto your television screens and into your homes for five decades; for the love, support, and loyalty I’ve been given; and for the privilege of being a small part of your lives,” she continued.

Francis thanked NATAS, her colleagues, the daytime community and especially the viewers who have followed her throughout her career. “My career in daytime television has truly been the adventure of a lifetime, and I am deeply honored by this recognition,” she said.

NATAS President and CEO Adam Sharp also celebrated Francis' lasting contribution to the genre. “We are thrilled to celebrate Genie Francis’s remarkable career,” Sharp said. “From Port Charles and beyond, she has left an indelible mark on the landscape of daytime television, and she continues to tackle bold topics as a courageous storyteller to this day.”

Genie Francis' Daytime Legacy Goes Beyond Port Charles

While Francis will forever be associated with Laura and General Hospital, her daytime career hasn't been limited to Port Charles. She portrayed Ceara Connor on All My Children, Diana Colville on Days of Our Lives and Genevieve Atkinson on The Young and the Restless.

Outside daytime television, Francis built an extensive career across television, film and theater. Her credits include North and South, Bare Essence, Murder, She Wrote, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Perry Mason and Roswell. Her stage work has included Crimes of the Heart, Defying Gravity and the Off-Broadway production of The Baby Dance.

Francis has been married to actor and director Jonathan Frakes for nearly 40 years, and the couple share two adult children, Jameson and Eliza. Now, as one of daytime television's most familiar faces approaches an anniversary few performers ever reach, the industry is celebrating a career that helped shape the genre itself.

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will take place October 30 in Hollywood. This year's awards will return to a single-ceremony format, with additional presenters and Gold & Silver Circle inductees to be announced at a later date.
