Time Jump and Rue’s Dangerous Return
The long-awaited Season 3 premiere of Euphoria opens with a five-year time jump, catching up with the characters we first met as high schoolers as they navigate life in their early 20s. The episode begins with Rue (Zendaya) attempting to cross the U.S. border from Mexico by driving over a fence. When her car gets stuck on top, she abandons it and walks into Texas carrying a large duffel bag. Along the way, she encounters a wholesome Christian family who offer her food and a ride to the Greyhound station. Rue seems quietly struck by the simplicity and joy of their lifestyle.
Laurie’s Hold on Rue
Once Rue returns to California, she delivers the duffel bag to Laurie (Martha Kelly). The episode then flashes back to a couple of years after high school, when Laurie tracks Rue down while she is working at a smoke shop. Laurie reminds Rue that the original $10,000 debt she owed has now ballooned to $100,000. As a result, Rue becomes Laurie’s drug mule, transporting narcotics back and forth from Mexico. She eventually brings Faye (Chloe Cherry) into the operation. The two live at Laurie’s house alongside several men who help run the business.
Where Everyone Is Now
When Rue is not running drugs, she drives for Uber around Los Angeles, where most of the original cast now live. Lexi (Maude Apatow) works on a nighttime soap opera, and Rue occasionally crashes at her place. Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Nate (Jacob Elordi) are engaged, but their relationship is strained by arguments over money, their home, and wedding plans. Cassie wants to make money through Instagram and OnlyFans, but Nate strongly opposes it. Nate has taken over his father’s construction business, though he is struggling to keep it afloat. Maddie (Alexa Demie) now works in talent management, representing influencers and actors. Lexi also tells Rue that Jules (Hunter Schafer) is working as a sugar baby.
Fez’s Fate and Rue’s Spiritual Questions
One of the biggest lingering questions from the Season 2 finale is answered early in the episode: Fez (Angus Cloud), whose actor passed away in 2023, is now serving a 30-year prison sentence. Rue still keeps in touch with him, but Lexi admits she has been too busy to reach out. However, the episode makes no mention of what happened to Ashtray (Javon Walton), who was last seen barricaded in a bathroom as police fired through the door. Rue also reconnects with her sobriety coach, Ali (Colman Domingo), and begins questioning whether she wants to explore Christianity. Her main concern is how that journey would align with her attraction to women.
A Deadly Drug Drop
Rue is later sent by Laurie to make a drug drop at a mansion filled with scantily clad women, guns, and drugs. The home belongs to Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), a Southern kingpin who owns strip clubs and has deep ties to the drug trade. After Rue delivers the drugs, one of the women at the house overdoses and dies because the stash is laced with fentanyl. Although Rue insists she had no idea what was in the shipment, Alamo still holds her responsible. In a terrifying moment, he places an apple on Rue’s head and points a gun at her. Once again, Rue narrowly escapes death when he shoots the apple instead. The episode ends with Rue laughing hysterically in a mix of relief and disbelief.
First Impressions of the Premiere
Season 3, Episode 1 does an effective job of catching viewers up on where the main characters are now, but the premiere ultimately feels underwhelming. The lush visuals and immersive soundtrack that once felt like characters in their own right are noticeably subdued. The creative choice to shift from digital cinematography to 65mm film gives the episode a warmer, dustier aesthetic, replacing the neon vibrancy of earlier seasons. While the stylistic change is intentional, the episode feels somewhat disjointed and does not fully pull viewers back into the emotional world of the characters. As the season continues, it remains to be seen whether the show can recapture its former synergy.
Season 3 of Euphoria is streaming now on Max.
